https://finance.yahoo.com/news/obgyn-called-gwyneth-paltrow-slamming-dr-ozs-astrological-claims-dude-just-stop-221309451.htmlOn Wednesday, Dr. Oz tweeted a photo of a page from the book, Your Body and the Stars by astrologer Rebecca Gordon. For centuries, we have used astrological signs to examine our personality and how we interact with those around us, however, these signs may reveal a great deal about our health as well, the physician and talk show host tweeted. Discover what your astrological sign can tell you about your health.
Dr. Jennifer Gunter, a mother-of-two and a board-certified OB/GYN in Canada and the United States, shared Ozs tweet, writing, Dude. Just stop. Really. This is embarrassing on so many levels.
Later that day, when Oz tweeted a promo for his television show extolling the benefits of astrology on the body, Gunter responded, What if your astrologer and your medium disagree. Who do you choose for health advice?
I love seeing America's Quack, the good liberal doctor" Oz get shat upon.

(115,735 posts)why did the article refer to Dr. Jennifer Gunter as "a mother-of-two and a board-certified OB/GYN in Canada and the United States"? How is her motherhood relevant to her criticism of Oz' astrology claims? Looks like another instance of how women are defined - her completely irrelevant mommy credentials were listed before her completely relevant professional credentials. This sort of thing has bugged the hell out of me for, oh, decades now.

(44,228 posts)not a fan of "opinionated gynecologist" either.
I follow @DrJenGunter on twitter, and she's consistently and vocally opposed to pseudoscience in medicine. That's just being rational.

(9,527 posts)Sadly given fuckwits like Paul Brown, Ben Carson and Ron/Rand Paul, you can't assume a medical degree implies scientific competency.

(53,410 posts)and my first thought is why do they say shes a mother of two. Does it add to her professional credentials or her believability factor? No. It doesnt add a thing.
If she were being critical about something involving children, then I can see it adding to her believability on the subject.
This is what people are objecting to. The inclusion of details that show sexism, racism, ageism and all the isms pertaining to people that just add to stereotypes rather than detract from them, as they should.
Language always builds perception or changes it.

(44,228 posts)labeled him a "good liberal doctor", and asked those critical of him if we hate Michelle Obama, because Oz had her on his show.
Thankfully, that particular poster no longer posts here.

(463 posts)That's why I'm always amused by the "Oprah should run for office!" contingent. She's a remarkable woman in many ways.
But her woo game is super strong.
Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, the Secret.
Lord. Her shtick is to make money off very stupid people. And here we are.

(44,228 posts)There was a good article about Oprah that I posted back in January, when there was buzz about her Oscar speech, and whether she'd make a good Presidential candidate.

(38,317 posts)I hate it that they all are lumped together by both sides, a binary for or against.
i'm not opposed to gmo technology, it's what huge amoral corporations might do for a profit that worries me.
if they feed me roundup-saturated food and i get cancer from it, it hardly matters to me whether they engineered the roundup-resistance into my food via gmo technology or by way of old-fashioned husbandry.
on the other hand, if they can use gmo technology to make apples produce vitamin b12, that would be awesome.

I'm very pro-science, and it bothers me a great deal to see people embrace anti-science conspiracy theory. There's a thought only the right-wing has anti-science types. Newp. We have plenty on our own team. I live in San Francisco. The anti-vaxx types are a thing. I just saw a local play about all of this. It was interesting. The anti-vaxx parent was the villain. Was not expecting that out of an East Bay play.

(38,317 posts)... the stars and planets beyond do not.
Unless you believe and act on it.
I don't freak out if a black cat crosses my path, but somebody who believes it's bad luck might step out into the street and get hit by a bus.
It's not the cat's fault.
Same goes for stars and planets.

(53,061 posts)I was working in a hotel room that didn't have a great mix of channels and saw his show and thought I would give it a look.
I was absolutely gobsmacked when this episode showed up.
I watched 2 minutes and they were talking about how a cancer had to be particularly careful of pains in the ankle.
This country is filled with idiots. Oz has figured out how to make a fortune by connecting with them. Disgusting.
