He was a genius. He was known in the industry for aggressively protecting his trademark/copyright rights, which is one of the most important methods of preserving his rights, but he was challenged this time.
I took an Intellectual Property class that featured a lawsuit, Lenz v. Universal Music Corporation that went to Fair Use of his work, "Let's Go Crazy," which was played during a Superbowl halftime show. A mother posted the YouTube clip of her son dancing to Prince's song, and she was issued a takedown notice pursuant to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. It's interesting to Google that case and see how the mother was successful in fighting the Notice.
RIP Prince.
