New York (CNN)Anthony Bourdain, a gifted storyteller and writer who took CNN viewers around the world, has died. He was 61.
CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide.
"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."
Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

(9,527 posts)You can't blame every little thing on Trump. He might suck, but unless he's got a time machine, you can't say he's responsible for the massive increase in suicide.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,202 posts)and we can definitely blame the GOP for that. We have a lot of downward mobility and that is very hard to handle. The suicide rate of white middle aged males has gone up a lot.

(26,355 posts)Look at what happened to Kelly Marie Tran, aka Rose from Star Wars: The Last Jedi - got viciously harassed on Instagram, ended up deleting all of her posts. And countless similar stories.
David Hogg getting swatted.
Bullying and viciousness has become cool and hip in so many circles, online and elsewhere.
We need a better way to combat this shit.
Even if you're not a direct target, when you see people being horrible to each other, it hurts.

(29,674 posts)It's a lifestyle.
I've worked in kitchens. The pace sets people up for drug and alcohol abuse, either for an energy boost or to calm down at the end of the night. And the stress brings out the worst in reactions.
He's been out of it for years but suicide isn't that uncommon amongst chefs. I've unfortunately known several.

(2,503 posts)A famous fashion designer just committed suicide a couple days ago. I think he was talking celebrities in general not just your industry although I completely agree with you.

(29,674 posts)I know Kate Spade died. She was a KC native and it's been all over the news. I just meant I wouldn't count this in the category of "shocking celebrity deaths" because it's much more common in the industry than everyone knows.
Bourdain was outspoken about his, and the industries, struggles with drugs and alcohol. He became a vocal supporter of women in professional kitchens and over the last few years was outspoken about the deep level of harassment against women in kitchens on a emotional, psychological, sexual and physical level. Even his death will draw attention to something normally not talked about in the industry: mental health.
I just don't want to see this brushed off as a celebrity suicide. Bourdain wasn't that guy. If his death could later be used to draw attention to something often brushed under the rug it would at least be something.

(38,958 posts)and I hope that you did not read that in my text. Three high profile suicides this week just seemed a bit odd to me.

(38,958 posts)Kate Spade, The Sister of the Dutch Royal and now this one. I appreciate that suicide stretches across all industries, economic groups and into every corner of our shared humanity, however this just seemed very weird that we would have 3 high profile individuals choose to exit this world all in the space of a few days.

(29,674 posts)And a huge Bourdain fan, this got to me. Unfortunately he's not the only chef I'm familiar with that has committed suicide by any means. Still-damn. He had no issues with discussing the toll drugs and alcohol have on the service industry, especially in food service. And he was very vocal about how the industry treats women, especially the sexualized treatment of women in professional kitchens.
We're missing a hell of an advocate and a man I admired. Now I need to step back a moment and take it all in.

(7,522 posts)Food was just his way of entering into the world of people, cultures, ethnicities and countries. He shined a light on our common humanity, from around the world. I was lying in bed this morning trying to get back to sleep when I started thinking about him and his show about Hong Kong I had taped and watched last night. He was such an inspiration for me in this dark world we currently live in. He made me feel good about people. I didn't know him (at least one poster on here does and had a thread about him a couple of weeks ago) but I feel like I've lost a friend.

(13,616 posts)Here is a man who was not just another rich person, but someone who took aim at a lot of them, including and especially his arch nemesis, Bobby "I rip off Mexican cuisine and claim it is mine" Flay. He was a person who used his food knowledge to expose cultures in the way that frankly, Journalists FAILED to do. See his episodes in the middle east and tell me he did not show both honesty and respect. He was HONEST about himself; when he went to the Bronx, he ate with Desus Nice, who later became one of the best political Satire makers. Desus talked about "crackheads..", tony said "wee, I WAS one once, with humility, not reality show style penance.
Here was a man that lived his life honestly, with both bravado and humility, who was not afraid to call out evil, such as when he was one of the first to call out Mario Batali.
I do not know what evil finally caught up with him. Maybe it was drugs, or maybe he was depressed at seeing this world go to hell. Let me say this, if any of us feel this depressed, the wrest of the world NEEDS us. We do not want to kill ourselves and let the Trumps and the Clergy laughs at us, and use our deaths to prove they "won." Tony could have done a lot more good, because he was exactly what the modern "Journalist" fails to be, someone who listens as well as talks, and then communicates in a way that people can understand.
I do not think his friend Anthony Zimmer is reading this. For all of Zimmer's cute factor, he walked the same road as Tony. Mr. Zimmer, if you ever get in this mode, remember those of us that are crying for your friend, and who knew that he, and YOU, still have a lot to do.
Mario Batali, if you are readign this depressed because those mean ol wimmin won't leave you alone, take a look at what your firend did,and realize that you could have, and should do better.
Bobby Flay, sorry, I won't weep for you when your souls sinks into that big ol pot of autherntico Mexciano chili. Even the iron Chefs won;t be able to make a meal out of you.
and to various of the more venomous (aka not all of) vegans, you use this to score points, and many of us will eat a steak to spite you.
I would say rets in peace tony, but right now you are traveling, probably to that great French restaurant over in the Fofth layer of Heaven.
Bon Appetit, me amis!
