(7,725 posts)Cool style formal uniforms. Dudley Do-right would've been proud. Never understood bright colors for soldiers etc. The British were walking targets w the red coats. dt? he's worried about his hair blowing away. Do you suppose they have a tanner on Air force One?

(66,386 posts)to distinguish friend from foe. Every 18th Century army had a distinctive color for their uniforms for that reason.
British: Red.
French: White.
Colonial America & USA: Blue.
Prussia: Blue.
Hesse: Green.
And so on.
A lot of nonsense is spouted about those crazy Brits marching along with their bright red uniforms, sitting ducks for those plucky colonials hiding behind trees and picking off the redcoats.
The truth is, we didn't start to win the war until we started fighting in the European manner, with uniforms, well-drilled and trained professional soldiers, etc.

(7,725 posts)Unreal! I never knew that precisely. The war was certainly won at the end of it. Seems the attrition rate for the enemy became too costly and burdensome as another 'reason' why the tide shifted (thankfully). Were Prussians and Hessians mercenaries? I wonder what the going rate was then and compare it to a "private contractor" from Blackwater? (or whatever it is now.) Our soldiers hands and feet and heads and lives are just as important as mercenaries. If 'he' wants to REALLY support the military...pay soldiers and sailors and seamen etc enough so there's no market for mercenaries. Or just outlaw them and give our 'sworn to constitution' soldiers the benefit of what they sacrifice. And conduct we expect as citizens who pay for, and serve in society in our own right...as the working tax payer...equally as noble in many respects.
If I had a choice....I'd go with blue (preferably a darker blue) if i was fighting in the woods and glens of East Coast America. We tie red hankies on stuff sticking out of the truck for a reason i think. Just my individual state though. Maybe different in another state.
The Canadians use Green Lights on their ambulances and response crews I'M TOLD. I haven't ever seen any emergencies while In Canada. But, just as an illustration that things like color have different meanings and reactiblity(?) factor...in different places on Earth. Americans use red in sirens predominantly. (NOT exclusively....just saying as a general discussion reply.)
The above made it real easy to distinguish who The Colonists had to shoot at though, and that was a good thing for all of us.
