https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2018/06/06/recreational-weed-michigan-voters-2018/677531002/The Republican controlled state legislature had a scheme to keep it off the ballot and thus suppress liberal voting. They were going to pass it and then delay it for years and regulate it so it would be pointless. Now the voters will make it law and it will take 3/4s vote to change it. This will pass for sure here in MI.
Politically, this is a big deal as a couple House Seats may flip because of it. Furthermore, another ballot initiative will be up for vote and it's to have a non partisan commission redraw districts, that too should pass and cost Reps some gerrymandered seats.
This is how change happens. 1 vote at a time.

(7,506 posts)1. This is a big deal
Ratpublicans were on verge of making it legal making the petition a moot point. They did this a few years ago when increased minimum wage was to be on ballot. Their plan on this was to pass it now then after election change law again. They feared it would bring too many voters to the polls. Fortunately they couldn't get both houses to agree so timed out. It will bring lots of folks out. Should not be good for them. Michigan desperately needs a high colonic.

(23,350 posts)3. That's an even bigger deal. Michigan can legalize it if we want, ...
... but it's still a federal offense.
