Democrats move out to 10-point lead in 2018 midterm election poll
The Democrats enjoy an expanding midterm election lead of 10 points in a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal national poll, even as six in 10 Americans voice satisfaction at the economy.
Democrats lead in a generic 2018 ballot by a 50-40 percent margin, up from 47-40 percent in April. The movement away from Republicans is centered on suburban women, a key constituency in "swing" House districts in Washington and across the country.
The poll showed a curious dual movement. The job approval rating for President Trump is at 44 percent, up four points from April: 53 percent disapprove of the job being done by the 45th president. Trump approval has moved in a narrow range of 38 to 45 percent in the survey.
At the same time, the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showed voters favoring candidates who will put a check on Trump.
Forty-eight percent said they would be more inclined to back a Senate or House candidate who will be a check on and stand up to Trump. Just 23 percent would be less likely to vote for such a critic of the president.
By contrast, a majority of 53 percent said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supports Trump on all or most issues.
