Pre-Existing Conditions Target Women In GOP Health Care Bill
Things like postpartum depression, cesarean sections, surviving domestic violence and, yes, even rape, are all grounds for coverage denial under this latest AHCA change.
Coverage for mammograms and gynecological services could also be denied under this new plan.
Though it's clear a majority of these conditions listed are gender-specific conditions, the amendment itself denies any sort of gender-based discrimination. It reads,
Nothing in this Act shall be construed as permitting health insurance issuers to discriminate in rates for health insurance coverage by gender.
snip
However, Physicians for Reproductive Health advocacy fellow Dr. Diane Horvath-Cosper told Elle, "Most of the people who have C-sections identify as women, so that's a shorthand for a gender discriminatory policy," and she also added, "A majority of people who get pregnant identify as women, so that's gender discrimination, straight up."

To Trump and the GOP, Being a Woman Is a Pre-Existing Condition
House Republicans will attempt on Thursday to pass their latest health-care bill, a piece of legislation that threatens to kick millions of Americans off their health insurance and interrupt critical care for people who need it to survive. (Update, 2:30 p.m.: The bill passed on a 217213 vote.) Read closely, the American Health Care Act, or Trumpcare, also reveals the basic theory that underlies the GOPs entire legislative wishlist on health care: the idea that being a woman is a chronic medical condition and a liability.
*domestic violence, insurers claimed, was a pre-existing condition.
*Pregnancy a 'pre-existing condition'
*if a woman wasnt pregnant, if shed previously had fertility treatments or a Cesarean sectiona procedure used in one-third of all U.S. birthsthat could be considered a pre-existing condition.
*Insurers even turned their backs on survivors of rape whod gotten medical care after their assaults, refusing them coverage or exploiting their trauma for thousands of dollars in higher premiums. Enduring a brutal sexual assault made a woman too risky to insure.

(83,770 posts)Spousal abuse is a pre-existing condition? On what fugging grounds? The fuck! Men repeatedly beating woman near to death or death is a pre-existing condition of women? So it is all her fault? I bet the menz therapy is covered. I am so incredibly angry right now and forever sad that we came to this. Do you know how many women suffer from spousal abuse? I wonder how many men in that room abuse their wives. We know Donnie does. How many others?
Thanks, guill for the recommend.
