Trump is a wannabe dictator who actively works to take human rights away and them blames our side for it. Why do you think a man who is putting immigrant children in dog cages after traumatizing them by ripping them away from their parents deserves to be treated like a decent human being? If you object to the trajectory he’s started this country into then you should put your efforts into fighting him instead of fighting those who are fighting him. If you want to rise above it then by all means do so. But putting others down for objecting to him in any way is counter productive and positions you as some kind of morality police.

It has to do with not using fat friends as a battering ram against who is currently the insult target. When I use them to take a swing at the target, they invariably get hurt.

If you don't believe fat is inherently vile, it isn't an insult. So if you are using fat as an insult, you are telling everyone else (including all the fat members of DU), exactly how disgusting you think they are.

It doesn’t bother me one iota when anyone insults grotesque gross people by calling them fat. I’m also a woman and I don’t get my feelings hurt by someone usind the c word. I’m 70 yet not insulted if someone assumes I’m a doddering senile old woman. I’ve done quite well fighting back. But your morality compass is assuming all the things I am need your protection somehow. Believe me if you want to protect anyone then protect those who can’t protect themselves, like people being denied life saving health benefits, or families left destitute by being torn apart by Trump and Sessions’ government.

you don't get to speak for all of the others - several of whom have spoken in this thread saying it is hurtful.

The TOS prohibits bigotry, including when it is targeted against body type.

No bigotry/insensitivity
Members are expected to respect diversity and demonstrate an appropriate level of sensitivity when discussing related topics. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, or other forms of bigoted intolerance are not permitted.
Why we have this rule: Democratic Underground is a diverse community which includes people of every race, sex, religious belief (or lack thereof), sexual orientation, gender identity, body type, disability, age, etc. We want to promote a welcoming atmosphere for all of our members, and do not want to provide a platform for bigotry
.

So - while no one is suggesting you have to feel insulted, the TOS says you can't use fat as an insult in this forum.

130. So it is just fine to shame people for things that can be changed
Sat Jun 9, 2018, 06:02 PM
Jun 2018

The discrimination against people who are overweight is similar - at least in nature - to discrimination based on race. Obesity can no more be hidden than skin color (as opposed to sexual orientation or, often mental illness). Unlike discrimination based on race (until, perhaps the Trump effect), it is socially acceptable and legal discriminate based on weight - so it is often not even hidden.

While such bias is less likely to end in targeted violence than bias against blacks, it does have a physical impact via health care - via misdiagnosis of asthma, COPD use of inappropriate or no equipment or just plain refusal to provide medical care for the person rather than obesity

In addition - weight is not as changeable as you might imagine. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1580453

In addition to ordinary challenges to losing weight and keeping it off, there are medical bases for an inablity to lose weight or to maintain the loss (thyroid imbalance, lipedema, hormone impalance) or drugs for other health issues that make it difficult or impossible to lose weight (Corticosteroids, diabetes drugs, antidepressants, steroid hormones, antihistamines, beta blockers, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics and migraine medication).

We should not be engaged in a debate about who it is OK to scorn, based on whether the targets deserve scorn because they can change the characteristic that makes them a target (remember people used that logic against LGBT individuals for decades). We should condemn all shaming based on race, sex, religious belief (or lack thereof), sexual orientation, gender identity, body type, disability, age - and OH - look here - that's what the TOS says, as far as participation on DU.

Using any personal characteristic as an insult inherently defines that characteristic as bad. And the argument about immutability - do you know how long that ws used to justify blatant hate speech directed at LBGT individuals?

I was responding to someone who was being particularly dense about the concept that using a personal characteristic as an insult hurts others who share the same characteristic by using a blatant example that everyone recognizes as insulting all those why share the characteristic to make a point, because the the person I was speaking to was blowing off the pain it causes, despite the responses from fat DU members in this thread - and every time being fat is used as an insult, or as a stand-in for being disgusting, lazy, etc.

If you have a better way of making that point, feel free to share so that I can adopt it - BUT if your point is that using fat as an insult is hunky dory, then you are just plain wrong, and to the extent you use that insult here, it violates the TOS.

I am quite comfortable with all three and quite capable of fighting my own battles which I’ve done all my life, and very effectively. It doesn’t offend me in the least to see someone use all these things as insults.

Other than that I agree with you on all your points. But you won’t find me shaming anyone on my side of the Trump issue for how they express their anger and shock about what he is and what he’s doing. Infighting among ourselves only serves his agenda.

I look like more than half of Congress and I'm just as old as most of them.

Our day is over and it largely has been a disaster for everyone but a very small minority of Americans.

I agree with every word of your last post. Implicitly. My hope is we come out of this Nov 6 election with a Congress that looks a lot less like me. To do this I will work with you and other fellow Democrats to get out the vote. This is one of the few times were we literally have to hang tight to each other or we will lose maybe the last chance we have to get Congress fixed before its too late.

Congress is to be the voice of the people and not the rubber stamp of a wannabe dictator.

I doubt it's "the best we can come up with." My guess would be "it's simply one more thing..." rather than best thing.

But, if you think that it is in fact, the "best we can come up with," that flaw appears to an argument of your own making no one else holds, rather than a collective sentiment.

As for words about his "oh-you-don't-know" policies, I'll direct you to approximately 75% of the posts on DU.

(But I get it... pretending we're offended by a thing, and further pretending it's the sole content of DU, does allow one to live a rather imaginative and fictitious world of our making)

As you age, you shrink.

I've always said I was 5' 2.5" tall. At various doctor's offices during my cancer treatment (within a 3 month time-frame, at most), I was measured as anywhere from 5' to 5'2."

So - I've shrunk at least a half an inch - perhaps as much as 2.5" - and the doctors' offices don't agree as to my current height. Those that had a tape on the wall, I suspect misplacement of the tape. But at least two that had an integrated height and weight unit measured me at least a half an inch different from each other. Time of day - gravity taking its toll on older bones?

But height is not as objective as it might seem.

Do you also belittle all POC because of the bad actions of one black person?
Do you also belittle all women because of the actions of one bad woman?
Do you also belittle all LGBTQ people because of the actions of one bad LGBTQ person?

Does Trump deserve everything that gets thrown at him? Yes, but that doesn't mean you have to play into his name-calling, ignorant, and juvenile games by behaving as ignorant and juvenile as he does.

This is suppose to be a progressive site but some days you just have to wonder about that.

So many delicate sensibilities to be offended all on one message board. Imagine.

Let me put it this way: the man is bloated and puffy and looks unhealthy as all get out. He looks and acts irritable. He looks like he doesn't get enough sleep and doesn't eat right. His bad habits have caught up with him. He looks choleric, like a stroke waiting to happen.

But oooooo, body shaming: we can't state the obvious because someone will make it all about them.

It's about all the fat people (including fat kids) reading this thread and thinking - "I can't be a leader because I don't look how a leader should look" "I shouldn't put myself out there because people will judge me" "People think I'm stupider, lazier or less capable than other people because of my weight".

Trump is a terrible leader because he is lazy, ignorant, self-involved, petty and short tempered, not because he is fat. The OP isn't about his health. It is saying "He's an embarrassment compared to other world leaders because of the way he looks." And that does make it about everyone else who happens to look the same way Trump does.
