Daniel Quasar (a designer in Oregon) is proposing a new, progress-focused design for the rainbow flag. The design puts white, pink, light blue, brown, and black stripes in an arrow on the left on top of the six-striped rainbow flag.
The main part of the flag is the rainbow flag so as not to take away from its original meaning.
The light blue, pink, and white stripes on the left come from the transgender flag. The brown and black stripes represent people of color, as well as those living with AIDS, those no longer living, and the stigma surrounding them, Quasar writes.
... was inspired to design the new flag when the Philadelphia Office of LGBT Affairs displayed a version of the rainbow flag with brown and black stripes to represent people of color.
I felt there needed to be more thought put into the design and emphasis of the flag to give it more meaning,

(53,957 posts)The only real problem is the complete ignorance of what the original flag represented. If people want to use it, fine, but I think it is stupid.

(1,832 posts)Many are using the gay rainbow flag from 1978 - confusing because this opposite version has been used since 1961 by the Peace movement:

(4,168 posts)We shouldn't need to plaster a race color chart over the pride rainbow because the gender concepts behind the original apply to everyone. There have to be better ways to call out racism in the gay community than this graphic monstrosity.

I know. Tall order.

(530 posts)...the new design separates specific colors out of the whole which, in my opinion, detracts from the original intent. The Rainbow represents ALL colors. The rainbow flag represents ALL people, regardless of color or any other distinguishing feature. Using the color as pigment theory, black is made by mixing the three primary colors together in equal parts. Brown is made by adding complimentary colors together in any amount chosen to achieve varying hues and shades. Other colors can be made by mixing the primary colors together in varying amounts (of course, you have to add white which, in color pigment theory is devoid of color). The concept is all inclusive. You can't improve on that.

The rainbow is all you need.

(32,083 posts)I always thought the rainbow was symbolic of being inclusive to everyone as it was. Adding those other stripes that represent factions of the whole group DOES change the original meaning of the rainbow, does it not? Why do they feel the need to separate out these individual groups from the entirety?

(70,103 posts)although looking at it, i think it might be more visually appealing if the colors of the triangle were flipped.
it's hard to accept change sometimes, but to me it is like adding stars to the stars and stripes as new states were added. i am sure some didnt like it the first time that happened, but i cant imagine it now w/o 50 stars.

I heard Gilbert Baker talk about the thought that went into this and it seems to me to be co-opting his vision.

I think we should stay with the current one.
