The announcement, which was made by Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, is rooted in a 2015 law that requires Muslim organizations to express a positive fundamental view towards [the] state and society of Austria, and bans foreign funding of religious institutions. Political Islams parallel societies and radicalizing tendencies have no place in our country, said Kurz at a press conference. His vice chancellor, Heinz-Christian Strache, added ominously, This is just the beginning.
At the conference, Austrian Culture Minister Gernot Blümel told journalists that the mosques had been shut down because of suspected extremism. All the mosques that were shut down were believed to belong to the Salafi tradition, a strict and literalistic school within Islam.

(54,379 posts)I can't stand Kurz and his rightist cabal. Trump's ambassador to Germany just invited the right wing Austrian Chancellor to visit him in Germany, something a foreign ambassador just doesn't do. Kurz just made it OK to smoke in restaurants again there, something the rest of Europe finally banned. Gee, I wonder who smokes?
But Salafism is bad news too. Almost all the hate preaching at mosques in Germany, France, Belgium and the UK comes from the Salafists. Honor killings, forcing their women to cover themselves, and beating (or worse) those who disobey are considered acceptable as Allah's will.
Kurz stayed within bounds with "Political Islams parallel societies and radicalizing tendencies have no place in our country." His Vice-Chancellor stepped over the line with "this is just the beginning." THAT line just took everything back to 1938. They are not labeled "extremists" for nothing.
