.......After all pandering normalises their bollocks in the same way it has with Trump

(32,083 posts)Plus, a whole bunch more 18-year-olds are coming into the pipeline, thanks to the Parkland kids. And, who knows how many are already regretting having voted for him, and will change their votes? The Dems don't need to pursue anyone on the right. They need to sit back and let him drive away everyone that is sane enough to leave. The rest aren't worth the effort.

(10,721 posts)And who knows what would happen if we had 100% turnout, or something even close to 100%.
I can only hope the electoral college is done away with someday. The vote of individuals in the least populous states carry much, much more weight than the vote of individuals in the most populous states. And that's anti-democratic.

(32,083 posts)Some of the suppression was remedied by a more representative redistricting in North Carolina, and I believe Pennsylvania. I just hope everyone makes sure their voter registration is still intact before they head out to vote, as the GOP is going to pull every dirty trick in the book to hang onto power.

(10,721 posts)Democrats need to speak more frequently and more forcefully about racism and sexism, and not less.
As I've written before, inspire the base, raise hell about race-based gerrymandering and voter suppression, and get more young people registered to vote.
The worst thing the party can do is take persons of color for granted and fall for the white working class/economic anxiety argument.

There is literally nothing we could do or say to change their minds.
I've accepted that several of my relatives and in-laws are simply not worth even interacting with unless I'm forced to. I do get a lot of reading done at family gatherings though.

(8,923 posts)This week I asked some right wingers why they don't hold their politicians accountable, who claimed to be the party of fiscal responsibility, when they saddled us with 1.5 trillion of debt for their tax cut for the rich. I pointed out that to pay for this that we would add 150 billion in deficit spending each year for the next ten years. Its pretty simple to check this, but they just called me a liar who was perpetuating "liberal lies" to discredit their great leader.
We need to mobilize and unite our voters. Forget theirs. These people may as well be living on another planet.

(14,491 posts)not worsen it. I fear if this level of divisiveness continues, our nation will easily fall to fascism or accelerated economic collapse.
Swimming in divisiveness, hatred and suspicion is precisely where the foreign interests and wealthy folks want us to be, and with our heads helplessly spinning 24/7.
I agree there's little that can be done to change right-wingers that are brainwashed, but that does not mean I should be an asshole to any of them unless I'm harshly provoked. But let's get real here - with the coming global environmental and economic calamity, Americans are going to have to work together again to survive.
