Mind you, I've encountered the border patrol many times before and I detest the obvious 4th amendment violation that these checkpoints represent, but never in a location this far from the border or (now, sadly) ocean.

But then I'm always sceptical whenever someone widely and proudly shares how they stood up to authority anyway.

Maybe I'm doing her an injustice.

If someone refused to turn over ID in this situation and they were with 100 miles then they could be in trouble.

Many people will plead guilty to things for which there is little evidence they did, just to avoid a "threat" of jail and to get out of the courthouse with just probation. We could stop up the courts if we always insisted on our full rights, which would stop them from bringing charges for which there is little evidence.

And the thing is, many folks who ride Greyhound buses are low income. They don’t have the means to fight border patrol if they are detained as undocumented and they can’t fight it when they aren’t. Greyhound is aiding and abetting this horror.

in the area of Washington where I live. They would make all cars pull off the road before crossing a bridge and then they demanded documentation. The only person they took to an ICE jail was an American citizen. He was held for days while his family had to get a lawyer to get him out. Senator Murray was notified of what they were doing and she demanded a meeting with the head of Border Patrol in the area. He said no - their work was high security. That lasted about 10 minutes and Senator Murray and Congressman Dicks met with him. The document checks stopped.

I can't stand those guys - they show up for emergency calls taken care of by the police and sheriff dept. They act like military in their 50 lb of equipment. In one of their meetings, one of the agents tried to strangle the boss. I swear they are taking steroids by the way they look. They do pick up people though - one man who had been here many, many years and had his own painting company. They made sure to take him when a house he was painting was half finished. They are assholes.

If it's anything more than a driver's license, most people (citizen or not) would be screwed by such a request. I certainly don't drive around with sensitive identity documents!

The stop is only going into California.

But even assuming the story is true, it totally misses the point of that stop. It never had anything to do with checking fruits and vegetables. It was started as a way to keep out Okies. Later, a way for California state to set up an illegal checkpoint (for all kinds of things) under the guise of “checking for vegetables.” Once upon a time, I was in a caravan of Deadheads they’d stopped to search all of our vehicles for “undeclared vegetation.”

There is an absolute right of interstate travel. Nothing legal they could have done to keep anyone from any other state out.

Kill them and leave them in the desert. Organize vigilante gangs to burn their camps. Say “Sorry, road’s closed. Turn around” or “Sorry, water’s only for residents of California” or “You look like a vagrant, welcome to ninety days in the county jail.” Just make the migrants’ lives a living hell in every way possible.

Much of that was perfectly legal — just like today. He had a knife. I was defending myself. I was enforcing city codes against homeless encampments. I was enforcing vagrancy statutes. Et cetera.

There’s no such thing as a “right.” You and me and everyone else have only the rights those in authority allow us to have. If you don’t believe me, google “Japanese Americans in California 1942.”

Go read the Grapes of Wrath or some other Steinbeck, then read up on the subject of migrant farm workers in California (regardless of race or time period).

America is now a place where we need to fight against police illegally demanding our papers

Lawless behavior is just normal now, yes?

Ridiculous.

And of coursr the entire world can see this, and as a result discourage their family and friends from visiting, perspective employees will look elsewhere to work, and criminals know that there's little legitimate left in the criminal justice system in America.

What a farce.

The Nazis didn't start with death camps. It was a steady drip drip of rights taken away one by one, with the help of established anti-Semitism. Hitler didn't invent anti-Semitism, just as Trump didn't invent racism, misogyny, and xenophobia. Both used what was already there as a tactic of fear and hate.
