Dem House candidate gets pepper sprayed in the face in campaign ad

A progressive House candidate in Colorado has released a campaign ad in which he gets pepper sprayed in the face as part of his call to combat violence in schools.

In the ad, posted last week, Levi Tillemann criticizes President Trump’s plan to arm teachers and school officials with firearms as a way to combat potential school shooters.

“I’m calling on Congress to stop talking past each other and try something new,” Tilleman says in the ad. “Empower schools and teachers with non-lethal self-defense tools, like this can of pepper spray.”

Tillemann touts pepper spray as an effective method to protect classrooms from school shooters, saying that it is cost-effective and can be stored safely.

“It’s powerful, but it won’t accidentally kill a kid,” he says in the ad.

The video then shows Tilleman being sprayed in the face with pepper spray, then dunking his head into a bucket of water and spraying himself with a hose.

“It’s incredibly painful, and now I just can’t see anything,” he says. “Wow, that’s intense.”

In the wake of the string of school shootings in recent months, Trump has called for teachers to be armed in schools, a suggestion that has been met with harsh criticism from the education community.

Give one person a gun. Give another a canister of pepper spray. Put them 20 feet apart and see who wins. Doesn't take a genius.

Given that the pepper spray for bears has a range of up to 30 ft...
the only spray I would use...

In Montana, when I hiked there some years ago, there was sage advice posted at the trail head.

The sign warned that both Black Bears and Grizzlies were in the area and advised that the way to safeguard from attack was to wear small bells on your clothing, to alert the bears you were nearby, and to carry pepper spray to use if the bears got too close.

The sign said the best way to determine if there were bears nearby was to look for fresh scat along the trails. Black Bear scat, it said, has small berries and bits of fur mixed in, all part of the bear's diet. Grizzly scat was easier to identify as it's larger, smells like pepper spray, and has little bells sprinkled throughout.

I live in Montana and am a professional bear safety tech for more than one federal agency. Your quip is one of the most ignorant statements made in this issue.

The reality is that bear spray is very effective, like 98%, in stopping a bear in its tracks and making it leave your immediate vicinity. It works on humans too, and a range of 30 ft is pretty damned good. I wish I could give you a demonstration.

It's meant to be humorous.
I find it hilarious, and also a bit of a warning, that grizzlies are bad-asses, even for bears.

But when the other person has a gun, I'm probably not going to like my chances. It's better than nothing, though.

a gun or spray, I'll choose the spray. I own guns but I wouldn't want the karma of taking someone's life. I'd rather spray them with incapacitating solution than killing them. After all that I have been exposed to, I would be glad to train anyone to use this spray in self defense even with the grade used for bears which is waaaay more concentrated than the kind sold for use on humans. We're talking instant effect and a good 45 minutes of crying and puking while grovelling on he ground, works for me. And then you can file charges, which is not possible a cadaver.

Spray wind unless gunman is a marksman. The spread on the spray gives it an advantage. Plus, teachers can spray from different points without worrying about killing eachother.

Again, not saying bear spray or pepper spray are ineffective. They’re not. But it’s far from a fair fight against a gunman who is intent on killing as many people as possible.

that from a distance of 30 or so feet you can easily incapacitate a human since all they have to do is inhale once, with bullets, small projectiles, there is more accuracy needed to affect the target. Small projectile vs cloud of incapacitating mist...
