Overheard while submitting my ranked-choice Maine primary ballot today

An older couple came to pick up their ballots....

The husband - "I'm a republican".

The wife - "I'm an Independent".

The husband "YOU'RE A REPUBLICAN!"

The wife - "But I thought I was an Independent!"

The husband "YOU'RE A REPUBLICAN!!!"

The wife - silence.

It was in the 1972 Iowa primary. You have to declare as a Republican or a Democrat to vote in the primary.

My mother, who was also going to vote, proudly told the poll worker, "He's a Republican." When I declared as a Democrat, instead, she wailed loudly, "We thought your brother was going to be the radical!"

(My brother lives in Arizona, and is now well to the right of Attila the Hun.
