Why isn't the UN stepping in about these kids being separated from their parents??!

I don't know how the procedures work, but why doesn't the United Nations hold THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA accountable for atrocious acts or a crime against humanity (or something similar)....... for the separation and detention of kids from their parents??!

Just by the UN bringing up such a charge, that alone should embarrass the hell out of tRUMP and his administration and the rethuglicans in Congress! I know, I know....they don't know what the definition of embarrassment is, but surely when the whole world is addressing it, they will feel like maybe they need to do something about it!

It is unbelievable that I would even need to ask that the world shine such a light on my country for such atrocities, but unfortunately with this damn administration, nothing is unbelievable anymore!

I am so outraged by what is happening to these children!!!

but there's very limited power they have to do anything. The UN can't do anything more than the power and will of its member states allow, and in this case all the power rests with the US.

The office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights has said

Information from various sources suggests that several hundred children have been separated from their families since last October. The practice of separating children from their parents is being applied to both asylum-seekers and other migrants in vulnerable situations, and we note that the American Civil Liberties Union has brought a class action case on behalf of hundreds of parents who have been forcibly separated from their children.

The majority of people arriving at the U.S.’s southern border have fled Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador – in many cases either because of rampant insecurity and violence, or because of violations of a range of other rights, such as health, education, and housing.

The US should immediately halt this practice of separating families and stop criminalizing what should at most be an administrative offence – that of irregular entry or stay in the US.

We call on the US authorities to adopt non-custodial alternatives that allow children to remain with their families and fulfil the best interests of the child, their right to liberty and their right to family life.

HOWEVER, the US provides a great deal of the funding for the UN and holds a permanent seat at the Security Council, as well as many other council seats.

The UN could certainly condemn the actions, but they can't really force any kind of solution onto this situation.

Condemning the US would be a powerful symbolic gesture, but it wouldn't really bother Trump or his supporters who already think that the US has allowed the rest of the world to make us wishy-washy. It would be another feather in his cap to have the hippie loving, peacenik UN tell him that he was being mean.

But they can't make him stop them.

Every human rights group in the world needs to step up and condemn Trump, his party and his voters for the fascist brutality they are using against innocent children on our border!
