Senator Jeff Merkley appreciation thread

I was on vacation when all this started to go down but unless I missed something it seems like it was Senator Jeff Merkley who got the ball rolling when he started attempting to get into the immigrant detention centers. This got the media to start covering this and as more and more people realized what was going on, it got out of Trump's control and reached a level of deserved outrage from the American people.

The battle on this issue is far from over but I wonder if hardly anyone would be aware of this Gov. sponsored child abuse yet if it had not been for his courageous attempts to draw attention to what was going on?

I completely agree. Furthermore, he should be getting more attention as a possible 2020 nominee. Jim Lane Jun 2018 #15

others joined in. Glad others did, but Merkley deserves special commendation. How’s about a Freedom Medal from Prez trump.

a week ago and they wouldn't let him in. That is what made alarms go off...not letting a govt rep in was a red flag. He went there out of concern and wanted to see for himself what the Hell was going on after hearing reports from the first whistle blowers. He is a good man and a humanitarian.

He is not going to have this in our country. First time he went alone and the second time there were 7 senators so they got in.

I'll have to try to remember it from now on. Sen. Jeff Merkley. He was WONDERFUL. His wife is a lucky woman to have someone like him.

I've seen him mentioned, but only very occasionally.

Unfortunately, even after he helped expose this Trump policy about children, Merkley doesn't have much of a national profile. There's also the practical difficulty that his Senate seat is up for re-election in 2020. Still, we could do a lot worse than to nominate Merkley.
