Burger King has apologised for offering Russian women who get pregnant by World Cup players a free lifetime supply of Whoppers.
The offer, which was announced on social media, was widely condemned by women’s rights activists as sexist and demeaning.
The promotion, which promised a reward to women who get "the best football genes", was removed from the fast food giant’s social media accounts on Tuesday.
Burger King posted a Russian-language statement on local network VKontakte saying "we offer apologies for the announcement we made. It was too offensive".
It had initially implied that getting pregnant by World Cup stars would "ensure the success of the Russian team for generations to come".
