Obamacare premiums are once again poised to spike by double digits in 2019, causing heartburn for politicians as voters will head to the polls within days of learning about the looming hit to their pocketbooks.
But unlike recent campaign cycles, when Republicans capitalized on Obamacare sticker shock to help propel them to complete control of Congress and the White House, theyre now likely to be the ones feeling the wrath of voters.
Thats because Republicans are now in total control of the federal government and therefore on the hook for the health care systems chronic shortcomings. Polling data has consistently suggested that more voters will blame Republicans for future problems with Obamacare. In addition, the GOPs repeated failures to repeal Obamacare after eight years of campaign promises will make it difficult to galvanize the base on health care.
Democrats and their allies have been hammering President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans for sabotaging the health care markets and driving up premiums. Protect Our Care has been running digital ads in 13 states featuring news coverage of big rate hikes and concluding with a sound bite from Trump: Let Obamacare implode. They hope that message will stick with voters come November.
The political implications go only as far as people understand that they are a direct consequence of the administrations actions, said Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.), a medical doctor who sits on a key committee that oversees health care. If they realize that, then they will be very, very upset with them.

(11,885 posts)In late 2015 Rubio introduced a provision into the omnibus bill to cause ACA premiums to skyrocket, intentionally to use and claim the Democrats ACA was failing and bad, which just happen to increase in Sept right before the 2016 elections. Trump and his minions are still using that tactic to destroy it, and others programs to claim they're bad, Medicare, Medicaid , and Social Security the same way now. They lied saying tax cuts for the wealthy would help us , they lied again and knew it wouldn't It'll be another blame the Democrats claim when it continues what they started.

(25,265 posts)instead of Obamacare. Trump & the Repugs made good on their promise to let Obamacare implode. They've done everything they could to weaken it.
Because of that - they own it now - and we need to stop calling it Obamacare and start calling it Trumpcare. In fact prominent Dems - as they campaign for the midterms - need to say just that. They need to drive in that message and say they need to take back the House & Senate to strengthen healthcare again to the ideals of President Obama's original plan and more.
