I Stand With Maxine

While I appreciate the good intentions of those Democrats who are urging us to be civil when dealing with our political opponents, I personally feel that at this juncture, civility is pointless.

Republicans are no longer people we merely disagree with politically; they are the people who are destroying our country, its principles, and its ideals.

I agree with Congresswoman Maxine Waters and applaud her idea of publicly shaming those who have shown themselves to be more than deserving of scorn.

Chuck Schumer has said that Ms. Waters’ remarks are “not American”. I disagree. I believe there is nothing more American than speaking out against our enemies as forcefully as possible, and at every opportunity to do so. And make no mistake – those who support Trump, act as his enablers, and defend his corruption are our enemies.

Our country has been overtaken by office-holders who are beyond corrupt. Our government agencies are being run by inept, self-serving idiots. Our judicial system is under fire, and the foundations of our democracy are being rattled to their core.

When an arrogant, lying, would-be tyrant sits in the White House and colludes with our nation’s enemies while distancing us from our allies, when he appoints his sycophants to positions of authority, when he flaunts the rule of law and declares he has powers he does not have, the time for civility is at an end.

When we see immigrants being treated like the “animals” Trump has labelled them, when we see innocent children being torn from their parents and locked in cages, when we see internment camps being built in our midst, the time for civility is gone.

We are told by well-meaning Democrats that we should speak with our votes. But we are now in the position we find ourselves in because our last election was tampered with by our Russian enemies, and still the Republicans have not taken any concrete steps to thwart future interference – in fact, many of them have adopted Trump’s declarations that any investigation into that interference is a “witch-hunt” perpetrated by his political enemies.

I, for one, am all for the public shaming of those who have shamed our country. Now is the time to let them know, in no uncertain terms, that decent people despise them for their treachery and their crimes against those they swore to serve. Let them know that they are not welcome among those whose healthcare they are so anxious to take away, whose pockets they have picked in order to enrich themselves and their cronies, whose rights they are systematically destroying.

It’s time to show Republicans the same civility and respect they have shown us – which is none.

They want us to stand by and act like 90 pound weaklings that enjoy getting sand kicked in our faces by brainless bullies. It is time to stand our ground and don't stand down.

I understand that Democratic politicians are urging civility because we try to govern for the good of all people when in power. Some of the leaders are not wanting to have a faction of people who are just going to rebel and rebuff any attempts at unity. The problem with that thinking is that the ship sailed many years ago.

Now I am a strong proponent of NEVER doing things the way that Republicans do them. No mocking of the vulnerable. No attacks based on gender, age, weight, race, etc... We can't become them to beat them.

However, strongly calling them out based on their behaviors and their policies is FAIR GAME. They walk around like they are entitled to enjoy all the finery and peace and quiet of American society while they try to dismantle that very society. Screw that!! They need to be confronted just like their policies confront and disrupt the tranquility of LGBT people, Black people, Latinos, Women, and poor people.

We SHOULD speak with our votes, but that does not preclude also speaking loudly with our voices and with our actions. We can do ALL OF IT and we should.

We cannot allow monsters to roam freely among us and not call them out. They need to be shunned by everyone with a conscience. None of us has an obligation to sit next to monsters in restaurants, at concerts, on public transportation, or anywhere. They need to be shown that they are not welcome among decent society. We're a society for a reason, we conform to societal norms and those people do not. They are not welcome and we need to show them that they aren't.
