It was during shrub's term. Is anyone comfortable doing one now? I'm not.

(175,742 posts)It was started by a member named Mortos, right after the 2004 election.
In this day and age (it is 14 years later), I would not feel comfortable posting that information. Too many trolls and creeps who are out to doxx anyone they can. A sad commentary on our times.

(23,322 posts)It seems like it ought to be an easy thing to do...to simply say your name. Our world is so beyond effed up now. When I really consider it...the repercussions could be YUGE... Dump Humpers wouldnt mind taking one of us or a loved one out if they had the opportunity. It would be a badge of honor to them.

(25,383 posts)No thanks.
I do have my full name on Facebook. I sometimes get men who follow me, but I block them.
They are usually widowers etc. I'm 62...so eewww. They usually list their location as another country etc.
Since I often post political stuff and belong to a bunch of political groups, I sometimes wonder if they are political spies. Either way, I block them so that can't see my posts anymore.

(9,900 posts)I personally have no fucks to give if someone wants to fuck with me. I have told truck stop dining rooms and roadhouse bars full of southern rednecks they are treasonous rubes for supporting tRump. By myself, unarmed, and very non Caucasian.

I agree with others that it would be exponentially more risky given this administration, where nothing is out of bounds

As for myself, it looks like I missed the "stay anonymous on websites" boat a long time ago.

(33,643 posts)But if you think the friggin' government doesn't know EXACTLY what ALL our NAMES are ... or last name at a minimum ... along where we live, where we work, what kinda car our families own, how many kids are in our family, what our families medical issues are ... you're delusional.
Naming yourself here isn't telling the NSA much that they didn't know a LONG time ago ... at most you're admitting to being the mom/dad/kid in your household, and it's unlikely they don't already know that based on your browsing history (i.e which email acct do you check, which FB account do you log into, etc). The gov't knows who all of us are here.
The only RARE exception is if you're a master of online disguise who's made an extremely consistent and conscious effort for YEARS to mask who you are online. I'm betting nobody on this thread has done so. The Russian Intel agent known as Guccifer 2.0 couldn't even do that.

(11,175 posts)I don't remember that particular thread. I started here on Nov 12, 2004.
I use my real name on Wikipedia, DU, JPR, and some other places. There've been online insults a-plenty but no repercussions in real life. Because I live in a blue city in a blue state, I'm not exposed to the dangers that some people are.

(16,110 posts)I detested W.
But as wrong as he was on, well, everything, I never believed that his ultimate goal was to destroy the entire social fabric of the nation.
I did not think he would be the end of our nation. I didn't even think Cheney would be the end of the nation.
The creature roosting in the WH currently? I fear what he will do.
At least with previous Republican presidents, I felt that there was a core of love of country there, that they had, buried down deep, a sense that they were part of the country. The current guy? He sees nothing beyond whatever his immediate desires are. And his desires are ALWAYS destructive.
