Politics After Dark: Where Cable News Viewers Go For Late-Night TV

https://www.forbes.com/sites/maddieberg/2017/10/24/politics-after-dark-where-cable-news-viewers-go-for-late-night-tv/#43057bee1feb
"But while the the apolitical flock to Fallon, Kimmel and their cable counterparts like Conan and Last Call with Carson Daly, and the left-leaning flock to Colbert, Maher (25% of his viewers regularly watch MSNBC), Noah and Bee (both of whom have audiences with 20% MSNBC viewers), no program has an overwhelming number—or even more than 12%—of Fox News regulars.

So where do Fox News viewers—who number greater than either MSNBC or CNN viewers—go? Samba TV has noticed crossover between the cable news channel and Turner Classic Movies, the Hallmark Channel, various sports networks and HGTV, and of course there are endless streaming options and talk radio.

But there is no cable or broadcast destination for late-night comedy geared towards the conservative audience of Fox News, leaving an opening in the marketplace with little-to-no competition.

“There is an unmet need,” says Wilch, “People on the right are just as passionately interested in shows that reflect their views as people on the left.”

There have been efforts: Fox News tried The 1/2 Hour News Hour in 2007, but it was cancelled after one season with poor ratings and even worse reviews. The network also had Red Eye, which was recently replaced by Tucker Carlson Tonight reruns.

There are various theories on why conservative comedy hasn’t worked on television: Some say comedy is about the little guy making fun of those in power--which tend to be the institutions conservatives champion--and others say that that it can appear preachy."

They believe they're out of power even when they're in power, "conservative comedy" just preaches to the choir

their target audiences are 18-49 or 25-54, Faux state news gets most of its $ from cable subscriber fees due to it's elderly audience
