Top Ivanka Ally Leaves White House, Signals Giving Up On Paid Family Leave

By Kate Riga | June 29, 2018 9:47 am

Maggie Cordish, one of Ivanka Trump’s closest allies and a lead staffer on paid family leave, is quitting, according to a Thursday Politico report. There are no plans to replace the staffer.

The two women have been good friends since college, and President Donald Trump is close with Cordish’s father.

Along with a loss of support for Ivanka Trump, Cordish’s departure also signals that the White House is largely giving up on its paid family leave push.

Though a White House spokesperson denied that implication to Politico, Republicans have been unsuccessful in moving paid family leave legislation forward.

Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Lee (R-UT) and Joni Ernst (R-IA) have reportedly been working on legislation that would allow people to borrow from their social security to fund paid family leave, but the idea is strongly opposed by Democrats and even some Republicans.

Better gear up to explain how stupid it is, though, because if it gets any traction, you know Fox will be baying about it 24-7, and the oh-so-fair-minded MSNBC and CNN will feel compelled to lend it credence, even if they do conclude it's stupid (which it is).

or near elderly, and messing with their Social Security isn't likely to go over too well. To many Americans, it isn't some abstract issue, it is very real and personal.

And folks under about 50 have been conditioned not to expect that social security will still be there when they retire. I hear it quite often from those younger than me. Of course Republicans aren't going to mess with current beneficiaries, although they make real sure that COLA increases are tamped down. The nation would hate to see pensioners living on anything but the barest of subsistence income, lest they get too dependent. Or something.

I don't even know how the Rubio/Lee/Ernst scheme is supposed to work, but clearly the nation needs to be sure poor people are punished sufficiently for brazenly having children and continuing to pursue gainful employment so that they need to have child care. It's a cinch we shouldn't be raising the minimum wage, and letting young people get too dependent on making enough money to live on.

Ivanka having actual friends.

I suspect they think they are friends, but they are people who she uses.
