There are now 30 million more trees in the world thanks to people who are casually surfing the web.
The environmental milestone is thanks to Ecosia, a search engine that uses all of their profits generated from internet searches to plant trees around the world.
It works similarly to any other search engine (like Google), except for the fact that since Ecosia started in 2009, their reforestation efforts have removed 1.5 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.

(7,725 posts)Or we import the billions of trees Brazil etc cut down every year.
We recycle more paper than ever in history.
I read books that are in my hand, and I refuse to feel guilty about it. I have maybe 200 total. When does someone other than the little guy have to suffer to stop climate change? Big industry is pushing the "it's the cows" angle as another way to dodge avoiding manufacturing that adds to climate change.
How about CORPORATE REFORM?
ps...what do we read when the power goes out and the computer and e readers last % of strength die? Books are tangible, and should be one of the last things we eradicate from the earth. If we must ...start with the bible. gads know we have enough of those floating around til the end of days.

(5,969 posts)This isn't about less trees getting cut down because we read more on the Internet instead of real books. This is a browser that uses parts of its earnings due to advertisements to support tree planting projects, on a relatively big scale. It's not about giving book readers a guilty feeling. It's about getting people to switch to a browser that supports these initiatives.
