Comcast and Xfinity users across the country Friday found themselves without working internet, and some were without television as well. Thousands of reports of the outage appeared on the website Down Detector and more than half of them said users were experiencing issues with their internet, another 15 percent of reports were of a "total blackout."
Customers were also taking to Twitter to reach out to the company about the possible outage. The company recommended that some users try checking the status center online, which would require an internet connection of some kind. Comcast also replied to users that they were working to restore service.
It was unclear what was causing the outage Friday and when the service might be up and working again.

My internet has been spotty but still working so far (started going downhill about an hour or so ago) - i.e., some sites like this one, are slow to completely pull the entire page. My HD cable tv channels appear to be gone but the lower SD channels are still working (not that I have even had the tv on but just checked it when I did a check about outage due to my internet issues).

(10,500 posts)I thought that my television died. And I still think that it might have and that the timing is coincidental.
I was watching HIMYM and the screen froze. Then when I changed channels I got nothing. I still have nothing.
BUT....the guide is working. I can still see the program guide.
On the other hand, I do have my internet working.
So I have no idea what is going on. My old TV died a couple months ago and I got an old plasma set from a family member. It seemed to be working fine, but now I just don't know.
What makes more sense: that the TV partially died but can still show the guide, or that the cable TV is out but the guide still works and I still have internet?
BumRushDaShow
(129,115 posts)But as I discovered, my standard definition channels were still working (the lower channel numbers) but the hi def channels were out (the channels in the many-100s and the 1000s).
The internet was acting flakey (some of the sites were slow to load and others like Google were fine). My weather station hadn't reported in to WU for an hour when I had checked it and realized something was up. Now my internet is okay except for mail still being out.
The cable channels work on certain frequencies/bandwidths and there may have been a filter limiting the high def to allow some kind of traffic through for the standard def on the cable part of the network (at least for some locations). The guide is probably a low bandwidth graphic thing.
It's not your TV!!!

(10,500 posts)I would never have even guessed to check that.
Since you are so smart, can you advise me about what my next desktop computer should be?
There is an Asus on sale for $729. 8 gb memory, 2.5 mhz processor speed, 7th gen I-5. The L2 cache is only 3 mb, which seems slow. I worry that it may affect internet speed. It is dual core, not quad core. I don't think I need more memory, the computer is mainly for web-surfing.
There is an HP that is a couple hundred dollars more, although I guess it could go on sale on the 4th of July. It has more memory, 12 gb, a quad core, but the processor speed is only 2.4 mhz. It does have a dvd/cd drive, which the Asus doesn't.
I would love to get an SSD computer, but it seems like they are only putting them in desktops at the high end. I don't need a "pro," let alone 16 gb memory. There is one I saw from Amazon, that apparently HP stopped making, but I am reluctant to buy a computer off Amazon, as opposed to someplace like Best Buy. It ran for just over a $1000.
How important do you think SSD is?

(129,115 posts)I confirmed both my sisters have no cable tv service at all but it could be because both have X1 boxes and I have an older cable box with a dvr built in.
<EDIT TO ADD: my sisters just got their cable service back. They were freaking because. Kids. Husbands. >
Regarding the SSD - I have found that the sizes are much smaller than the standard SATA drives and computers (both desktop or laptop) cost more if they have them (and even more for larger capacity ones). It will depend on what you do with your computer regarding the best specs. I.e., if you stream alot and/or game, you might want to go for more RAM and a better video card. If you store movies or alot of photos/images, you may want a bigger drive. They do have SSDs in laptops but usually the higher end like the desktops.
The processor speeds have pretty much topped out at 3 ghz or less (and most are running @ 2.0 - 2.4 ghz). None of that should impact your internet speed per se (unless you are doing multiple hi def streams) but you want to make sure you have a gigabit network card (although your modem/router would also need to be able to do that speed too to get the best throughput).
If you are are burning cds or still use DVDs, I think it's useful to have a drive although you could always buy one separately. I think most if not all computers have some sort of microSD card reader built in and all have USB connectors if you need to add an external reader or hub.
I have been using an 1-7 laptop because I stream stuff in my internal network (got it from Staples which may be an option unless you are boycotting them ).

(10,500 posts)I guess I would just like the computer to move quickly. The Asus I saw took about 8 seconds to wake up after going to sleep.
I also like the idea of a quiet computer, which I heard SSD gives you. I read that some people feel that HPs can be noisy. I don't know about Asus. I currently have an I-Mac and looking to switch to a PC. But the Mac, even from 11 years ago, is perfectly silent.
I am not sure how much 4 cores matters for keeping the computer from slowing down when web-surfing. Also, I think that the dual core computer comes with "4 threads," whatever exactly that means. In any event, the processor speed for the Asus is 2.5 mgz, as opposed to 2.4 for the HP.
A dvd/cd player would be nice, but an external one would be pretty small and probably only 30 dollars or so.
BumRushDaShow
(129,115 posts)The "noisy" HP is due to the fan and their "cooling" thing that activates (-at least for laptops, my desktop doesn't make noise although the fan will come on if the case gets warm).
Neither the number of cores nor the 2.4 vs 2.5 ghz shouldn't impact your surfing (my desktop has 4 cores and I run SETI on it - thus the fan coming on occasionally... ) but if you are streaming or gaming, you might see some better performance assuming what you are doing is coded to even use those 4 cores for multi-threading, etc.
Again assuming you are not storing a bunch of large files, you could go on and get a computer with a SSD. The OS may take up a chunk of that space and usually they will include a partition on them to restore the OS back to factory condition in case something goes wrong.
Have never had an ASUS (but have an older Acer netbook), so can't speak to that model.

(15,090 posts)Word on Twitter ( which I can only get on my phone now) is that Comcast said that a major fiber backbone was cut and should be repaired sometime between 5:00 and midnight.

(129,115 posts)Field Operations reports the local utility company has completed all of their repairs and access had been granted. The local police force is still having to redirect all traffic, which is delaying the fiber splicers arrival. Replacement fibers have been ordered, and they are currently in transit from Raleigh, NC with an ETA of 20:15 GMT.
Mind you: that ETA is for L3; Comcast will still have to get systems back up afterward.

Not sure why that would impact north of there (assuming the cut is down that way, although am unsure where that poster lives) but...
My internet appears to be okay now and my HD channels have been slowly coming back, although access to mail is still out. However one of my sisters in a different county from here said her cable tv service is completely out.

(6,931 posts)All have to be meticulously put back together so light can flow directly and not get shot off some other direction.
BumRushDaShow
(129,115 posts)and the fiber cables come as bundles of fibers (as pairs where some will eventually be "lit" and some will remain "dark" for later expansion/backup). If there is a break, they could just run a new segment between the connection boxes but it would depend on where those fiber boxes are (underground or on pole, etc). Then they would have to do the end-to-end testing, etc. I think my office's fiber had 2 pair (for about 100 people). Obviously a big trunk would be more but not necessarily that much more, but proportional to the anticipated traffic.

Just my 2 cents.

(15,090 posts)For what its worth, Twitteris now reporting that two fiber backbones were cutone between New York and Chicago and another in the southeast. If this is true, then we may be looking at deliberate sabotage.
