I saw a few minutes of HUD secretary Ben Carson on C-SPAN today advocating tripling the amount of rent poor people who are on Section 8 and other federal housing assistance programs pay each month.
He said it would encourage them to go out and get a job to help themselves get out of poverty.
He also said it would help pay for cuts in the HUD budget he himself put into place.
So, he asked Congress to cut HUDs budget,
and now wants to triple the rent poor people pay to help pay for those cuts.
HE HAS RELEASED AN OUTRAGEOUS PLAN THAT WILL TRIPLE RENTS FOR THE LOWEST INCOME HOUSEHOLDS AND PUT 1. 7 MILLION AMERICANS AT RISK FOR EVICTION.

(7,634 posts)Is that they are totally devoid of apathy. They will believe that trope that poor people are just lazy and don't deserve help. Of course, the moment it happens to them and they need the help, they are finding it perfectly fine.

(15,805 posts)DU is one of the few places where I feel safe in acknowledging my reliance on Section 8 and other programs. So . . .
The rent went up this spring, as it always does. But this time, Housing Authority advised that they would not cover the increase. I'd been living in a small two-bedroom apartment, two bedrooms grandfathered in because that's where I was living when I qualified for the program (small = both bedrooms combined have less floor space than the single bedroom in a previous apartment).
Then they advised that I needed to move to a one-bedroom in order to continue receiving the same benefit. I was fortunate that the landlord helped arrange a switch to a one-bedroom in the same complex, allowing me to transfer my deposit and saving the expense of having to hire a truck for the move. This was appreciated, as housing in this area is very tight, most places are well out of my ability to pay for.
The catch: The one bedroom's rent also went up so that it matches what the rent had been for the two-bedroom, and Housing took the view that since I'm now occupying a smaller space they would reduce their contribution accordingly. The upshot, I'm now paying 40% more for significantly less space, with no increase in income. And if/when there is a Social Security COLA next year, it will be eaten up by the usual rent increase.
So yes, I'm still trying to figure out the logic of how all this will serve to incentivize me to get younger, healthier, and less disabled. If I do figure it out, I'll let you know!

(21,675 posts)A person CAN'T work when they are disabled, does he not understand?! My ex and son, who are both disabled, live together, and are on Sec 8, will end up on the street if this happens, as they don't have a vehicle either. The shitty little roach-infested slum apartment they have in OC will be unreachable in price.
This will hit the Magats hard.
