It's 2018. We have a very good chance to win a majority in the House this year, and a slimmer chance to do the same in the Senate. We need to plan farther ahead, though, if we hope to reverse the damage done by Trump and the current Congress. So, here's my six-year plan to do just that.
2018 - We work our asses off and GOTV to regain majority control of the House. With that, we can do a lot to block Trump's legislative plans. If possible, we get a slim majority in the Senate, as well.
2020 - Dump Trump year. In that election year, we need to elect a Democrat to the White House. We can do it, because Trump will either already be gone, or will have screwed things up beyond all recovery. In the same year, we increase our majority in the House and add a few Democratic Senators to increase our small majority there.
2022 - This is the year we get a 2/3 majority in the Senate, while increasing our House majority even further. With a Democratic President, we can undo almost all the damage done by Trump, except for the Supreme Court. The President will already have nominated and have confirmed at least one SCOTUS justice by the end of 2022.
2024 - We reelect our Democratic President for a second term, and solidify both our House and Senate majorities. With the retirement or passing of at least one Republican SCOTUS justice, we regain a majority on the SCOTUS and begin undoing the damage the conservative SCOTUS did.
Through those six years, we also get back control of some state legislatures, due to the high Democratic turnouts and elect more Democratic Governors. The continuing rise of the power of Millennials, Generation Next, and our increasing number of citizens of color, along with a demographic shift to a younger electorate, should make it possible to finally push the conservative Republicans, dominionists, and other right-wing factions into a minority position once and for all.
The key to this plan? A powerful GOTV effort enabled by unification of Democrats to achieve those goals. We can do it if we have the will to do it. Yes We Can!

(988 posts)I would add that we need to change the make up of the individual state legislatures as well.
This is one thing I fault Obama for and that is not having the party fight for positions in the different states. This allowed for more gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc.

(10,824 posts)If we have the will and the patience. Nothing is going to swing our way in an instant. Not one election cycle, not one presidential election, etc. But a long-term plan can have the results we need to heal, repair and move forward.
This is the sort of thinking that succeeds and actually does produce lasting change as opposed to feel-good moments.
Good stuff, MM.

(1,354 posts)Recently on MSNBC or CNN I can't remember which someone pointed out that with democrats controlling all three branches of government they can increase the number of justices to 10, 11 or any number. Precedents have already been set in the past. Did anyone else hear of this. Can you imagine the exploding heads if dems increased the court by installing two of the most left wing jurists in the US.
