(6,747 posts)New century; new ideas. Schumer/Pelosi call for civility may have cut it in the 20th Century, not so much in the 21st.

(63 posts)I like Nancy. She's a fighter and isn't afraid to stand up to Trump. She isn't a visionary, though. If we took control of the House she would fight Trump but have little to put forward in terms of leading the country. We need someone inspirational. Someone the country can look to and say "I want to be a part of that". That's the anti-Trump.
Whether Nancy steps aside or not, there is no civil war. That may be good for media ratings. Just like there's no real dissent on the Republican's side. There will be a lot of fresh faces who will get air time challenging Trump in the lead up to 2020. Hopefully, Nancy will see the need for fresh blood by then.

(31,893 posts)Pelosi's chiding of Maxine Waters was the last straw for me.
I haven't forgotten her "impeachment is off the table" - no consequences for lying this country into war!
The right wing has fought a long, dirty war against all of us, while the Congressional Dems worry about offending them.

(36,231 posts)The Schumer/Pelosi call for civility was my last straw too. The GOP has been playing the long game while dem leadership has played nice for 40 years. Someone better get in the ring with Maxine & start throwing some punches or we're going to lose our country.

(91,965 posts)subscription to the NY Times when they had a front page story over a year ago blaming the Democrats and the "hubris" of Obama for causing the republicans to reject global warming
"The Republican Partys fast journey from debating how to combat human-caused climate change to arguing that it does not exist is a story of big political money, Democratic hubris in the Obama years and a partisan chasm that grew over nine years like a crack in the Antarctic shelf, favoring extreme positions and uncompromising rhetoric over cooperation and conciliation."

There is a lot more false equivalencies from that paper than just that Judy Miller lied to us about WMDs in Iraq
They have come a long way from the Pentagon Papers, and it isn't a good thing either

(2,581 posts)redefining the Presidency' - no he trashing it. The Times employs word-smiths. They understand what they do. Your post also made me reread a letter to the Times I wrote on Judy back in 2005 stating Judy betrayed this country by being a shill for the administration, and was aided and abetted by the Times, which printed her ruinously false articles on the front page. For a democracy to breathe it must have a free press. However, the fourth estate is dead, and died with the falsehoods written by Judy and printed by the Times. When will we learn.

I think the idea of a "Democratic civil war ahead of the midterms" is laughable as we all, or most of us anyways, know who the enemy is (Hint: it isn't us) and how important it is to win this fall.

(806 posts)both born AFTER the current House Democratic leadership team - Dick Gephardt was born in 1941 and David Bonior was born in 1945; in contrast, Nancy Pelosi and Jim Clyburn were both born in 1940 and Steny Hoyer was born in 1939. Think of that - the Democratic House leaders of OVER 20 YEARS AGO are younger than the current Democratic House leaders. Yeah, I don't think it's all that radical to think our current House leadership is getting too old when they're older than their predecessors from two decades ago.

Swapping out experienced leaders for the sake of cosmetics would begin a cycle of discontent and confusion. A recipe for disaster.

(14,167 posts)Yes, the NYT (and others in the media) love to see the Democrats making fools of themselves, but even a stopped watch is correct twice a day.
Two of the top three need to step down and make way for younger people. If Pelosi steps down, I would like to see Hoyer or Clyburn stay for another term. If Pelosi stays on, Hoyer and Clyburn need to make way for the new school (Swalwell, Schiff, Castro, Bustos).
The biggest and boldest ideas should be coming from our leaders, but they're not. They are being dragged by the grassroots and the base. It needs to be the other way around. The leadership needs to communicate the plans and mobilize the people and grassroots to put pressure on the other elected officials to make it happen.
