NYT: Trump embodies REAL American family values.

Baffling as it may be to elites, Mr. Trump embodies a real if imperfect model of family values. People familiar with the purple family model tend to view his alienation from his children’s mother as normal and his closeness to his children as exceptional and admirable. I saw this among my acquaintances in Nebraska. Even those from red families were more likely than my acquaintances in New York to know someone who has had a child out of wedlock or is subject to a restraining order.

Mr. Trump’s purple family values may even explain some of his populist appeal. Global leaders like Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel and Jean-Claude Juncker appear to have stable and loving marriages. But their childlessness makes them worse exemplars of family values in the eyes of some non-elites than divorcees who have multiple children — a category that includes Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy’s far-right League party, and Marine Le Pen, of France’s National Rally party, as well as Donald Trump. Contempt for elite respectability is reflected not only in the respective party platforms, but in the personal lives of these populist leaders.

In her speech to the 1992 Republican Convention, Barbara Bush said, “However you define family, that’s what we mean by family values.” Debates over Mr. Trump show that different ideas of family are not so easily reconciled.

"A quick search reveals the author's perspective ...
'Published by The Institute of Religion and Public Life, First Things is an educational institute aiming to advance a religiously informed public philosophy.'....
.Thank you for describing the author’s affiliation. In the past I’ve written to the Times requesting if they would do exactly what you have done, disclose the purpose or advocacy of an organization, alongside its name or frequently, it’s euphemism, as a matter of policy."

From the NYT op-ed:

Matthew Schmitz is a senior editor at First Things and a Robert Novak Journalism Fellow.

And about FT:
First Things is an ecumenical, conservative and, in some views, neoconservative religious journal aimed at "advanc[ing] a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society". The magazine, which focuses on theology, liturgy, church history, religious history, culture, education, society and politics, is inter-denominational and inter-religious, representing a broad intellectual tradition of Christian and Jewish critique of contemporary society.

Published by the New York-based Institute on Religion and Public Life (IRPL), First Things is published monthly, except for bi-monthly issues covering June/July and August/September. The journal's name is often abbreviated to FT.

First Things was founded in March 1990 by Richard John Neuhaus, a prominent clergyman, intellectual, writer and activist. He started the journal, along with some long-time friends and collaborators, after his connection with the Rockford Institute was severed. Neuhaus was ordained a Lutheran minister in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and was later affiliated to the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, the American Lutheran Church, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, before converting to the Catholic Church in September 1990 and entering the priesthood in September 1991.

With a circulation of approximately 30,000 copies, FT is considered to be influential in its articulation of a broad Christian Ecumenism and erudite social and political conservatism. George Weigel, a long-time contributor and IRPL board member, wrote in Newsweek that, after its founding, the journal "quickly became, under [Neuhaus's] leadership and inspiration, the most important vehicle for exploring the tangled web of religion and society in the English-speaking world." Ross Douthat wrote that, through FT, Neuhaus demonstrated "that it was possible to be an intellectually fulfilled Christian".

Just because it's in the New York Times doesn't mean it's not a RW talking point.

He does not have a purple family and I know no one here in Ohio who has his history. He is a pig. The Evangelical crowd just needs an excuse for supporting someone that clearly Jesus would not have approved of ...adultery, hatred of his fellow man...etc.

...Values? He has kidnapped, is holding hostage, hidden 2300 refugee children, including babies.. from.their parents, media, politicians..from the world. He's a !:#@$$@g monster! And, anyone with a platform, an audience that does admonish him not stop is complicit in crimes against these children, crimes against humanity. Values? He has no moral compass.

I go there to find out who wrote the opinion and see it's some dude from some neo-conservative semi-religious site who's pulling purple family buzzwords out of his ass. I'm beginning to wonder if the Times takes money under the table to print bullshit like this.

Evangelicals desperately threw themselves at him, prostrated themselves before him, tried to co-opt this petty, cruel, wealth-obsessed man, because he was their chance to rise back to political power.

At no point have Evangelicals opposed Trump on moral reasons.
