In the aftermath of last weeks deadly assault on Annapolis, Marylands Capital Gazette newsroom, President Donald Trump seemed annoyed.
In conversations with those close to him, the president casually aired a complaint and a predictionthat the fake news would unfair[ly] try to blame him and his demagoguing of the adversarial news coverage for the mass shooting, according to two advisers who spoke to him about the matter.
In Trumps view, his critics in the media and Democrats would use the story of murdered journalists against him, to highlight his years-long push to delegitimize and bash those he perceived as the enemy of the American people at major news outlets. Furthermore, the president has repeatedly insisted that the culture and rhetoric coming from the American left is the real problem and far more likely to inspire violence than anything coming from the right, anywayand that voters understand that.
Reached for comment on this story, White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters simply wrote back, I refer you to the presidents public comments [from Friday].
Both privately and publicly, President Trump has a tendency to make tragediesincluding ones with body countsabout himself and his own grievances or ongoing feuds. (Many of his public responses to the devastation in Puerto Rico late last year sharply underscore this proclivity.)

(7,947 posts)He really is the most self-absorbed person in the world. I don't understand why his fans don't react to that the way they'd react to it in a boss or sibling or friend-- with disgust and alienation.
But they hear him say something so self-pitying, like he's the victim here, and they righteously fall in line. It's really appalling.
I'm dealing with a friend who keeps talking about "civility" (only, of course, as it applies to Maxine Waters, etc). Oh, he'll say, "Of course Trump is horrible. But two wrongs don't make a right! We should be BETTER than Trump!"
Somehow I just don't think "civility' is the answer to a squid-like narcissism that goes far beyond personal obnoxiousness to affecting all of our lives.

Fox News host Sean Hannity suggested Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters was to blame for the shooting at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, days after the congresswoman's call to publicly shame Trump administration officials.
"I've been saying now for days that something horrible was going to happen because of the rhetoric," Hannity said on Premiere Radio Networks' "The Sean Hannity Show." "Really, Maxine? You want people to create 'call your friends, get in their faces.'"
Hannity also suggested former President Barack Obama's rhetoric was to blame for the shooting.
"And Obama said that too," Hannity continued. "'Get in their faces, call them out, call your friends, get protesters, follow them into restaurants and shopping malls,' and wherever else she said."
