Definition of Democracy

There are many definitions, and many won't perfectly align with the American political system. But a rough definition I heard once was basically, "The minority agrees to be ruled by the majority". In the US system, being aware of the "tyranny of the majority", it was created with potential safe guards to protect the minority from this hazard.

Unfortunately, those safe guards have now created a system where the majority is being ruled by the minority. By virtually every measure, the democrats receive more votes for presidents and congressmen. Yet we have a republican president, a republican controlled congress, and for decades, a supreme court that is dominated by republican appointees. This all happens both through systems NOT intended by the constitution, and by the intentional manipulation of those features meant to protect a minority, but NOT intended to create a majority where there is none.

But that's where we are. Between the disproportional representation in both Houses of congress, gerrymandering, and voter suppression, we have a government run by a minority of people. And I'm not talking about just one election. This has been going on for a few decades now. And the GOP makes no bones about it. They actively work not to represent a majority, but to ensure the minority holds power.

The thing is, there is a definition for that. A definition of a system of government in which a minority believes that they have a "right to rule" and can rule over a people even though they represent a minority of the people. It is a system in which the minority works to ensure that government serves the interests of the minority over the interests of the majority.

That is a feature of a system of government called Fascism. And if this situation sustains itself, that's exactly where we are headed. We have a shrinking white, European descent population that is intent on maintaining a system of government that serves their needs and interests over those of the rest of the population.

There is a reason none of the definitions align. NCTraveler Jul 2018 #1
