(6,261 posts)Unbelievable!
Belgium have been awful so far.

(268,718 posts)Serious mistake from Vertonghen and then Inui scored.
This is great for world football given how they reached the RO16.
Brazil must like this
Corner to Japan now.

(6,261 posts)They've been very fit in the past too, while Belgium look slow, tired, and bereft of ideas.
Lovely header- game on

(6,261 posts)I've never known one like it. Everything about it has been great, and even the refereeing has been pretty good.

(268,718 posts)This is fantastic
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)But he looks rather erratic to me. He could probably have caught that first one.
Another one of Ron's rules of football: erratic goalkeepers are often great penalty stoppers. It may come to that yet.

(268,718 posts)A great match.

(268,718 posts)Last 20 seconds and Belgium wins great pass and goal Chadli.
They must be favorites now.
First team since 1970 to come from 2-0 in the last 16.
A great match - another classic.
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)Even that was in extra time.
Brazil - Belgium will be great.

(268,718 posts)I'm lovin' it.

(5,308 posts)and that last goal was just startling.
malaise
(268,718 posts)No need to keep on going forward - left holes in the back - the keeper saved them until he couldn't.
Great game

(62,387 posts)not only the last goal, but there was something like 6 great shots on goal - and 6 great saves - in the final 10 minutes.

(6,261 posts)The last team to come back from two goals down in a knockout round were W. Germany against England in 1970.
Or so Gary Lineker just told us, and I have no reason to doubt him.

(33,643 posts)the 2 goal advantage was established would come into play in the equation.
What an accomplishment!
malaise
(268,718 posts)Still searching for an answer which suggests that it may be at any point in bathe match.
West Germany also came from 0-2 against Hungary to win the 1954 final 3-2.
BeyondGeography
(39,351 posts)Their first goal was an accident and Japan blundered by putting everyone forward for that last corner. All Courtois had to do was roll the ball to DeBruyne and they were off to the races.
malaise
(268,718 posts)Too much forward movement after scoring two and some great saves or Belgium would have scored earlier.

(6,928 posts)Right down to the end. I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

(2,216 posts)I have ever watched, much less at the knock-out round of the World Cup.
This is the reason you have to watch every game, even if you don't particularly have a fave. It is amazing soccer.
malaise
(268,718 posts)This hasn't happened for 48 years and the purists know why. Japan allowed too many holes in the back after those two great goals. They defended really well in the first half but they were preoccupied with going forward er the two goals.
At 2-2 they should have opted for extra time or protected the back even if they wanted to win in the time added on.
It was fun but it showed their inexperience.
BeyondGeography
(39,351 posts)for the heat they took for freezing the Poland game. Japanese sense of honor and all that.

(268,718 posts)The odds had to favor Japan. The only other time this happened in a knockout match was in 1970 but as they say the ball is round - anything can happen which is why we watch.
