'No!' Dutch Prime Minister smacks down Trump in the Oval Office for saying that tariffs are positive

Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands interrupted President Donald Trump on Monday as he was saying that tariffs against the European Union would be a “positive” step.

During a pool spray with Rutte in the Oval Office, Trump said that he hoped he could “work something out” with EU leaders to prevent the tariffs his administration has vowed to levy.

“If we do work it out, that will be positive,” Trump said. “And if we don’t, it will be positive also.”

“No!” Rutte interrupted.

“Just think about those cars that pour in here,” Trump continued.

“It’s not positive,” the Dutch prime minister insisted. “We have to work something out.”

to see how Trump disses Rutte, what crude nickname he uses.

More proof that we need an informed, capable adult in the Oval Office.

It's the right sentiment, but the wrong person to say it to. Trump pretends that the other party's willingness to negotiate or talk or try to make a deal means that the other party will give him whatever he wants. "They're all pleading to talk to me! I'm a big shot!"

It won't take very much longer before other countries decide they don't really need to include the United States in their agreements. Trump's word can't be trusted, he's shown that time and again. I think quite soon (that is, within the next 12 to 18 months) other countries will be putting together agreements that cut the U.S. out of the equation. It'll take some time because of historic trade ties and contract obligations, but as contracts expire and new agreements need to be made, other countries will just leave off with the U.S.

The Dutch are mostly honest and open about things like this.
What struck me was how Rutte reacted, raising an eyebrow, giggling, and just saying, "NO! It's not positive. We have to work something out."
All said with a smile.
Typical Dutch directness.
Notice also that he understands English. Nearly everyone there speaks English fluently. This makes it difficult to learn the language, because if you speak your Dutch poorly, they respond in English, but that's another story.
