Private School for Rich Kids Announces Plans to Segregate Students By Race

If youre reading this thinking it is one of those clickbait-y headlines for a perfectly reasonable policy, youre probably going to be disappointed because a New York City private school for the children of wealthy parents has announced that it will begin separating its students based on their race. And, according to numerous reports, for the Little Red Schoolhouse, will begin is a euphemism that describes something they have already been doing for years.
The Little Red Schoolhouse in Manhattans West Village charges $45,485 per year and teaches the children of David Schwimmer, Christy Turlington Burns, and Sofia Coppola. Parents recently learned that the school officially implemented an ethnicity-based segregation policy last year, according to the New York Post.
During the 2017-2018 school year, 7th and 8th-grade students were placed in homerooms determined by their race, where they spent 30 percent of their classroom time. The plan worked out so well that the officials informed parents of plans to expand the new Jim Crow education initiative to the 6th grade in the fall.
Although the school claims the practice was limited to 2 grades, one parent said she realized that all but one of the students on her childs grade level were assigned to the same class throughout their elementary years. Another parent said his child noticed the school had been quietly segregating students by color as far back as kindergarten.
On June 12, school director Phillip Kassen sent a message to parents explaining the policy, leading to a large outcry. Eight days later he emailed the parents again and said he would alter the educational equivalent to redlining, but wrote that the school would continue to use race as a critical, but not primary, determinant.
However, experts state that many schools in New York and throughout the country have implemented this kind of policy.

(Wiki) The Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School, also referred to as LREI, was founded by Elisabeth Irwin in 1921 in Manhattan, New York City as the Little Red School House, and is regarded as the city's first progressive school. Created as a joint public-private educational experiment, the school tested principles of progressive education that had been advocated since the turn of the 20th century by John Dewey. The founders postulated that the lessons of progressive education could be applied successfully in the crowded, ethnically diverse public schools of the nation's largest city... Read More..

(18,124 posts)yet growing up in a segregated amerika taught me a few things about the devious evil of racist white people.

(2,074 posts)and the argument was the same - that different ethnic groups learn and grow best among themselves. It was called "separate development." But it was better known as apartheid... And the reality was discrimination against people of color.
In short, this educational theory was BS then and it is BS now.

(34,131 posts)My father wanted to do as his brother did for his children - send us to private church run schools that were all white. My mother objected - she maintained that we were going to live in a world with all sorts of people so we might as well learn to get along with everyone starting in school.
Aside from the fact that segregated school systems are never equal as to resources, they also reduce the communication among various groups of people. And isn't that what we are being told to do now - go out and talk to everyone and not just stay in our little comfort zones?

(63,221 posts)do such a thing - especially NYC - and this school is right in SOHO! What do the parents of the minority children think about this? They are spending a LOT of money to send their children to that school, shouldn't they be outraged that their children are being separated from the the other white children?
What is this world coming to?

(120 posts)I didn't see any breakdown of the student body along racial/ethnic lines, but I would bet it is overwhelmingly white.
If you have only a handful of black or Asian or Hispanic kids in the entire school, it might make sense to put them together in the same homeroom class so that they know they are not the only minority kid in the place. From later in the article:
Now, if the five (hypothetical number) Hispanic kids in the school are their own separate homeroom class, that's definitely an issue. But if the five Hispanic kids in the school are put together in a typical homeroom class of 20-25 students, I could see how that might be beneficial to them.
Of course the flipside is that the other homeroom classes are entirely lacking in diversity. The ideal solution would be to have enough minority students at the school that every homeroom class can have representation.
