There was a vigil tonight in Boise for affected families.
Our caseworkers describe Ruya as a child who always sparkled when she walked into a room. She was her mothers princess, always the center of attention, and loved pink and Disney princesses. She had just turned three years old Saturday, and according to our IRC colleagues in Boise, was the epitome of sweetness.
Ruya and her mother are Ethiopian refugees. They arrived in the U.S. in December 2015 and settled in Boise. Her father is in Turkey. Ruyas parents are enduring every parents worst nightmare, which is made doubly cruel by the fact that they fled to America to escape conflict in Ethiopia. IRC had resettled the Kadir family in Boise. Our local team is doing everything possible to support the familyand the other refugees injured on Saturdayin this moment of extreme distress and fear.
Now is a moment for people to pause, to come together and to redouble the commitment to help the worlds most vulnerable to safety, wherever they may be.

(9,663 posts)those convicted of a capital offense. However, several years ago my thinking changed as to what was actually worse. In my view, life behind bars, without parole would be much more a punishment than execution.
Despite the lengthy court and appeals process, execution is the easy way out for both the state and the convicted whereas spending the rest of one's days behind bars, daily facing one's own demons, regrets (or not) would be an awful, hopeless existence, and much more so if that person is actually innocent. My two cents.
Peace to little Ruya, her family and friends

(6,930 posts)He is a scum who should have already been locked up. Most of us would consider life behind bars beyond imaginable, but scum like him will thrive there. Three hots and a cot, and plenty of people to bully on a daily basis.

(9,663 posts)Maybe, maybe not. My understanding is that incarceration is especially tough on people with convictions against kids.
He absolutely should have been locked up by now. He has spent time in both Kentucky and federal prisons. Today's Idaho Statesman listed a mile long account of assault, sex, drug, parole violations and weapons charges over many years in California, Tennessee, Kentucky and Utah. How his 30 year old ass got to Idaho I don't know. Given his past, he simply should not have been out on the street.
Beside little Ruya, the other victims and their families, there is another person whose life will likely be forever changed. That is the woman who allowed this guy to stay at her apartment, in the same complex as the refugees, for a few days til she kicked him out for bad "behavior". That apparently set him off on his deadly rage. I cannot imagine the guilt she must be feeling right now.

Despite Idaho's redstate reputation, for many years Boise has been a haven for refugees fleeing awful conditions in other countries. This tragedy has brought that community closer together and our larger community closer around them.
Peace to little Ruya, her family, friends and everyone else affected by this senseless act.

Echo the last statement in the op snippet:

(89,247 posts)there is something so fucking wrong with this. a 3 year old enjoying her birthday . she should be alive but some fucking loser who should have killed himself takes her life .
look at how alive she is there. i'm reading about her mother and others telling of her life. people shouldn't have to do memorialize a 3 year old like that.
if that fucker gets killed in prison i would not give a shit.
