Republican lawmakers are losing their patience with the presidents trade war, saying its hurting their states and the partys chances in the midterms.

Republican senators are at their breaking point with Donald Trumps protectionist trade blitz.
Not a party meeting goes by these days at which multiple Republicans dont vent that the president isnt listening to them and plot how to fight back. Id like to kill em, groused Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a close Trump ally, referring to the administrations expanding list of tariffs.
The mounting frustration with the Republican president is a warning sign for the party amid whats been a surprisingly favorable stretch. Trump appears, at least for now, to have weathered the internal GOP backlash against his family separation policy. He has a new Supreme Court vacancy to fill, and he ended last week celebrating the economic miracle he said his tax cuts created.
But Republican senators say they cant get the president to comprehend that his tariffs offensive could upend all of that progress in short order. Commodity prices in the heartland are sagging, U.S. allies are retaliating with tariffs of their own and GOP leaders are fretting that the booming economy is about to go into a pre-midterms nosedive.
Individual senators have met with the president, including me. The Ag committee met with him, the Finance Committee met with him. And theres nobody for this, said Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), the Agriculture Committee chairman. Trump is a protectionist who has his policy wrapped around the rear axle of a pickup. And its hard to get out.

If only there were some way for the GOP-controlled Congress to do something about it...

(13,305 posts)...can someone explain to me how these tariffs passed? Was it an executive order? Some other way? How is that possible? Same thing with all the immigration laws and actions.
Is this all being done by exec order? I know that none of it passed congress, and last I checked and was told "The president isn't a dictator. He can't do anything without congress taking action!"

(17,862 posts)Trump has gone so far beyond that standard. In a rational world he would be called out on it.
Not today.

(1,009 posts)the immigration "law" was actually a policy change that needed no EO. However, a judge last week ordered that the families be reunified, and they are defying that order so far.
I will say one thing - no president should be allowed to do the things he has or possibly intends to do without congressional approval. Things like tariffs, pulling out of NATO, NAFTA, climate agreement, WTO, etc. The only reason he hasn't dismantled the govt completely, is because it takes congressional approval to close shop on any part of our govt. Instead he neutered various depts with useful idiots.

(25,111 posts)and prayers. POC harassed and murdered, they are all thugs. The media is our enemy wherein 5 journalists were murdered, oh well. and the list continues.
Tax cuts for the wealthy. Gut social safety nets. Kill Unions, healthcare. Reduce wages with no benefits. Cost of living rising. And the list goes on.
BUT, hurting the wealthy's profit, and I know they don't give a shit about rural America nor any other citizens (except for the rich) and they want to fight back.
Was it Grassley that said the United States Supreme Court was more important than the United States Consitution, this is where their hearts and minds are.
