Maxine Waters is done with 'nice guy politics'
By Sylvan Lane - 07/03/18 06:00 AM EDT

From the perspective of some House Democrats, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has the right message. She’s just not always the best messenger.

The Los Angeles lawmaker’s early calls for President Trump’s impeachment and viral showdowns with administration officials have endeared Waters to the party’s young, liberal base. And those stances have also garnered the respect of many House Democrats, who admire how Waters, 79, sticks to her political convictions.

"She is up-to-date, she is smart, she is authentic and she is not scared to express herself,” Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) told The Hill, adding that her constituents in Milwaukee often ask her if she knows Waters. "She is transformative in terms of appealing to different generations of people.”

Waters is aware that she sometimes pushes the envelope, according to a former aide who said the congresswoman thinks Democrats as a whole have engaged in "nice guy politics" for too long.

“She’s definitely pushing people into a place of discomfort,” said the former aide, adding that Waters is “slowly but surely getting the Democrats to play the game the way Trump plays it.

Most of Waters’ Democratic colleagues speak about her with reverence and respect when asked about her work in Congress, calling her a studious, fearless leader.

Those close to her say that she’s used to public and private pushback from her colleagues and won’t be deterred by the controversy surrounding her anti-Trump remarks.

"She is very, very much minority in the House of Representatives, and that hasn't dissuaded her from speaking her truth in a room surrounded by people who do not look like her,” her former aide said. "It's easy to be quieted because you're scared, and she's not scared.”

and will have the power to subpoena Dumpy's financial documents and expose him for the corrupt fraud that he is. We should all think about that to motivate us to help elect Dems everywhere.

Could Maxine Waters Subpoena Trump’s Bank Records If Democrats Take the House?

especially prior to the mid-terms.

I would not be suprised if this is something that she and Nancy Pelosi decided on.

She is right on the money and at 'her' age, does she care anymore if you make points or not. It is more important for her to fight for what she believe in. At least she has a backbone!! A lot of our politicians just push paper and don't really help anyone!! She has SPARK!! Go, Maxine!!

13. Love Maxine, like the article, don't like the framing...

We don't want to "play the game the way Trump plays it". I know that I am probably splitting hairs, but hear me out. Trump is a liar and just mean. That is how he plays it.

I want to play the game the way that Maxine plays it, the way that Alan Grayson and Al Franken used to play it, by saying the truth in very blunt ways. I don't want to see nicknames. That is childish. I do want to see that being called out. Trump assigns nicknames, is he 8 years old?

We need to stop being "polite" and start pushing back, every time, like Congresswoman Waters is doing, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is doing. That is not incivility and it is not "playing Trump's game" it is simply sending a message to the bully, that your not backing down.

One Democrat on the panel told The Hill that a few members of the committee are worried that Waters' recent remarks about confronting administration officials are a sign that she's itching to lead a crusade against Trump.

"We've got a division because some people are very concerned that she's going to be pushing an ideological agenda," said the lawmaker. "We can have disagreements on the substance, and that's fine. I just want to make sure it doesn't become like a show."

WTF??? Really???? Geezuz!!!!

No more Nice Guy! Full steam ahead Maxine ... All Aboard!

15. Oh no, not an ideological agenda!

Democrats need to avoid that at all costs - it makes it seem like there are actual differences between the parties and that it matters who's in control of things. We can't have that! I'm glad anonymous Democrats are willing to talk to The Hill and torpedo Rep. Waters and her ideological agenda. We definitely don't want it to "become like a show," because that plays so poorly with the public or something, and the media hate covering shows. Everyone needs to just calm the fuck down, and let's pen erudite, Jamesian essays that ponder deeply the issues of the day in a thorough and even-handed manner. That's what voters and the media want to see, not this attention-grabbing, confrontational, ideological agenda stuff!
