Gender issues and blood donation

I went to Canadian Blood Services yesterday to give blood and was told of a new policy that will take effect on the 9th of July regarding the question of gender and sex. People will no longer be asked their current gender but will still have to indicate if they were born male or female. It has something to do with it being riskier for people of one sex to receive blood from some groups of the opposite sex (men receiving blood from formerly pregnant women, for instance - I looked it up). Is this the case in the U.S. for blood donation?
