The family was returning from their grandmother's birthday party in South Georgia over the weekend.
On their drive home to North Carolina, Felicia and Othniel Dobson stopped for dinner at a Subway on Newnan Crossing Boulevard with their children -- ages 8, 12, 13, and 19, -- and the children's aunt.
I have a 24-year-old sister whos a recent graduate of North Carolina A&T (State University). My daughters 19. Shes entering sophomore year at Wake Forest University, Felicia Dobson said.
The family was at the restaurant for about an hour when a Subway employee made an urgent 911 call.
"I need somebody to come through here please, ASAP. Now," the employee said. "There's about eight people in a van, and they've been in the store for about an hour. They keep going back and forth to the bathrooms by my back door."

(9,527 posts)Better behaved, smarter, less likely to be criminals etc. Some of those stereotypes are true, some aren't, and as always don't necessarily apply to the individual.
But who spends an hour at Subway? I eat stupidly slowly and I couldn't take that long. That said, the Subway people were rather dumb calling on their own customers. Which gets to something I really don't understand. Given how many of these things have hit the news lately, why aren't people picking up on the hint to not do this? In a best case scenario, you lose those potential customers again as well as anybody they tell. Worst case scenario and you're on the news losing way more potential customers. There's literally no scenario in which the person comes out ahead.

(157 posts)Both the graduate and current college student were part of the family of assumed "criminals". It gives some context around just how ridiculous the accusations were. It's unfathomable that a recent college grad and a current college student would be interested in robbing a Subway. Not to mention that they and the mother/sister were also females; the least likely gender to pull off a robbery. Putting 4 years into earning a college degree to give yourself a chance at the "American Dream" and then throwing it all away for $200 is just asinine. That would be like Jeff Bezos robbing a bank. Add to that the fact that they had their parents/young siblings/nieces/nephews with them and it just illustrates how there is literally NO WAY for people with brown skin to avoid these types of disgusting incidents in this country. They're never safe from being falsely accused no matter how docile and accomplished they are.
Evil scum like the "threatened" Subway employee would be the first to criticize NFL players for not standing during the national anthem. It's clear that people with brown skin are just not welcome by many in this country and the hypocrisy around asking these same folks to ignore that very fact; and serve in its military, win Olympic medals for it, and wrap themselves in patriotism for a country that doesn't acknowledge them as full citizens, care whether they live or die, or just give a general damn about their well-being is just baffling. This country has been and continues to be a disgrace when it comes to the treatment of brown skinned people.
This story hits home for me because my father, a man with brown skin, was a Sgt in Vietnam and made over a hundred similar trips with my mom, brother, and I in Georgia throughout my childhood. We stopped to eat/rest on most of the trips. I never thought it would have been possible for my father to be faced with the circumstances this family was faced with, given his contributions to this country and just how great of a man he was. It breaks my heart to come to the realization that he lived his entire life and put his life on the line for this country while he was never really welcome here. Sometimes I just want to be done with this country and consider living elsewhere to raise my children.

(157 posts)female, traveling with their family, with young children, sitting down eating a meal they just ordered from the restaurant they intend to rob, or lacking some type of disguise. If we used your overly simplistic logic, then we should just assume that since many wealthy men have been accused of sexual assault, that all wealthy men should be under suspicion of sexual assault regardless of the additional characteristics associated with them being wealthy men. And according to your overly simplistic logic, these wealthy men would have become wealthy in order to perfect their craft of sexual assault.

(267,827 posts)These days she's in court for fraud - real estate fraud. We all knew there was no way she was maintaining that lifestyle without stealing people's money.
I would have been as pissed as these folks but I have severe problems with folks insinuating (explicitly or implicitly) that racial profiling is OK if it's poor people without college education.

(157 posts)folks (Russian bots and non-Russian bots) purposely trying derail a subject and distract in order to fit their own agenda. How is it possible for the person who posted this topic, has brown skin, has family and friends without college degrees, and has been racially profiled himself on NUMEROUS occasions including just recently (long story) to be OK with ANY form or racial profiling? You literally have spent more time focused on college degrees/non-college degrees, insinuations, real estate attorneys, etc than the fact that a family was just violated in a disgusting way while simply doing what millions of people do on a daily basis without incident. Honestly, this type of division and splitting hairs is an example of one of the reasons Big Con Don is President. People who agree on 95% of the issues can't get their stuff together because they focus most of their effort on the 5%. Meanwhile, the other side has no true beliefs as evidenced by the excuses they make for Big Con, and they simply win elections by focusing on voting, getting folks out to vote, and stopping folks like us from voting, plain and simple. You're barking up the wrong tree if you really are genuine so I ask that we just agree to move on and focus on the issue. America has a major problem with race that needs to be solved. Period.

(64,982 posts)Just as they have two prove themselves to racists by being twice as good to get half the credit, they also know the worst will be assumed about them unless they offer proof that they are not different from any other aspiring middle class family.

(2,396 posts)Actually I thought it was common knowledge that black people had to be twice as good to get half the credit.
I haven't had my coffee yet so I'm blurry, but I also thought that President and Mrs Obama were even dealing with that phenomena.

(64,982 posts)illegitimate squatters in the WH and constantly obstructed by racists whenever they try to fulfill the duties of their position, but there were (and still are) actually people who claimed that they need to see President Obama's transcripts from college and law school, because they didn't believe he actually earned his degrees.
I mean, anyone who even listens to him and Michelle can hear how intelligent and well-educated they are, but because they are black, bigots assume they can't possibly have earned such impressive academic credentials.

(8,747 posts)That is way too long, especially for 8 people. It's not like it is a nice restaurant, where you get served by a server, and are expected to tip.
They should have been asked to leave, rather than calling police. Subway, unlike other chains, does not have Wi-Fi, so you are not encouraged to dawdle.

(157 posts)It's not unreasonable for them to take a little extra time to stretch their legs and take a break from the road; especially the driver. I have done it myself on long drives and anyone traveling with kids knows they can get restless after a while. The drive from South Georgia to North Carolina is not only long, but Georgia's highways are terrible and they also force everyone, including truckers through metro Atlanta's poorly planned nightmare of a road system. Even if you wanted to go from Alabama to South Carolina, you would have to go through the rage inducing disaster that is Atlanta because they were too dumb to create a bypass. This was a Monday so they were going to have to sit in traffic once they got near Atlanta unless it was after 8PM. Trust me, I deal with this foolishness several days a week.
Keep in mind that Georgia is a relatively large state. If you look at the map below, they were more than likely traveling from the southwest corner and had just taken 27 north to 185 north and were on 85 north before they stopped in Newnan. I have driven this more times than I want to count and it can wear on you as a driver with all the hills, twists, and changing speed limits. A stop in Newnan for an hour is actually a really good idea since you still have to get through Atlanta's unholy mess and beyond.

(61,418 posts)It's also perfectly reasonable to expect each of the 7 people to use the bathroom during their stop, which would be considered normal behavior by customers if the Subway employee didn't have some kind of bias against these particular customers.
