Conservative columnist pens scathing July 4th column calling for destruction of white-nationalist GOPIn a blistering opinion piece in the Washington Post, long-time conservative commentator Max Boot called out the Republican Party for becoming the white-nationalist party with a conservative fringe under President Donald Trump and advocated for the complete destruction of the GOP as it now stands.
According to Boot, Should I stay or should I go now? That question, posed by the eminent political philosophers known as The Clash, is one that confronts any Republican with a glimmer of conscience. You used to belong to a conservative party with a white-nationalist fringe. Now its a white-nationalist party with a conservative fringe. If youre part of that fringe, what should you do?

That is why I join Will and other principled conservatives, both current and former Republicans, in rooting for a Democratic takeover of both houses in November, he concluded. Like postwar Germany and Japan, the Republican Party must first be destroyed before it can be rebuilt.

(11,750 posts)All of these Post-Republican never Trump columnists and think tankers are nothing but grave robbers.
They are the grave robbers who toiled endlessly in the graveyard of buried and reviled 19th century ideas. They dug up the body parts- racism, cronyism, robber-baronism, Federalism, Christian Identity, and brought them to the lab in order to construct their Monster and now that the monster has escaped the lab they act like they had not part in building him.
Make no mistake...this monster is not to their liking, but once he has been destroyed they will go right back to building a "better" one
a new Republican super-man. These people are NOT our friends.

(31,261 posts)I know several families of Chamber of Commerce type republicans, none are racist and pretty much all voted for Hillary (that I know of). But until Trump, they were fully on the crazy train, but now it is running over them.

in their party, now they've taken over the party.
Coddling racists got them to where they are.
Been saying that for decades.
I never have directly said anyone was a racist. But I've been very clear for a long time anyone in the Republican Party either is, or is very much accepting of them, and willing to be in League with him. Because that's what it was.

(31,261 posts)True conservative republicans who aren't the racist or religious nut type, should vote 100% democrat and hold their nose. Once the Republican Party is weakened to a shell, then they can go back in and take over that party, and maybe they won't repeat the mistakes of the past (i.e., demonizing political opponents, questioning opponent's patriotism, believing in near zero taxation).

(14,483 posts)Why? Because of where their political money comes from. I'm not betting on the philosophical stripes of the Koch brothers, the Mercers, Adelsons and Murdochs changing much unless the sensible Republicans manage to flat run them out of the party.
And, that would require the destruction of the hardened right-wing organizations such as the NRA, Heritage Foundation, ALEC, etc. There's also the hardened right-wing media outlets including hundreds of talk radio programs and Faux News (a cancer on our nation, IMO).
However, we can always hope. Would the formation of a new conservative party be more likely since this one is rotten to the core and so entrenched?

(31,261 posts)Can do one of two things, vote with us, or run as conservative independents and split the conservative vote. It make more sense for them to vote with us until we gut their party, then they can go back in and take it over, and yes, they will have to end some old alliances that have gone bad.

(31,261 posts)Is that republicans like that conservative commentator can help us push facism away and seal it in the dark hole that it again rose up from. Facism won't go away, there is and will be some in every country. What we can't allow to happen is for Facism to take over America, decent republicans (jeez, I can't believe I put those last two term side by side!), can help us turn back fascism, or they can be consumed by it, along with us.

(5,275 posts)Ex Republicans like Steve Schmidt and Jennifer Rubin have been as persuasive and stridently detailing the danger of Trump than anybody.
We must stop this move toward fascism here so we can work against the tide of fascism rising again overseas, strikingly similar to events in the late 20s and 30s over there.

(10,721 posts)There simply wouldn't be enough people to support right wing economics, right wing health care policy, right wing environmental policy, and so on.
Bigotry, particularly racism, is the tie that binds. It's the glue holding that party together.

(36,814 posts)As such their GOTV efforts must get an increasingly larger share to the polls. Hard to do that without demagoguery, which is the surest path to white-nationalism. Eventually there will be a tipping point where sane people are going to bail and the wheels are going to fall off.

(14,516 posts)For what it's worth, what I think will play out over the next decade is that we will flip both US Houses of Congress in November, and gain hundreds of seats at local and state levels.
Then the new Democratic controlled Congress will begin the hard work of reversing all the damage the billionaire parasites have done to democracy, including the reversal of Citizens United and perhaps the reconfiguration of the Supreme Court to achieve a more constitution-oriented approach rather than legislating from the bench like the current right wing of the Court is wont to do.
National Popular Vote will pass in enough states to make the Electoral College a thing of the past.
At the state level, hundreds of new people will reinvigorate the Democratic Party and will take over the nominating process.
When the Democratic Party is firmly ensconced in power, it will begin to see a division between the more conservative and more progressive wings.
The Party will split into these wings, which will ultimately become two separate parties. This as the founders foresaw - they created a national government that would require plenty of debate and compromise to achieve forward progress. We may be frustrated sometimes because of this debate, but it is vital to the republic.
I believe, even if the Dems do at some point in the future split, there will be emphasis on climate change, on healthcare, and education. Because, conservative or progressive, any Dem is better than any Republican.
But, hey, this is all in future, and all my speculation. Right now, the road before us is to vote BLUE. Straight Dem!
Happy 4th!

(37,132 posts)...spent their careers turning the Party of Lincoln into the Party of Ahab, at which point all it took was a name change to make it the Party of Trump.
I've yet to see even one of them recognize that they did to themselves what they did to the Rockefeller Republicans in the 70s and 80s. The same themes they pushed in order to gain power created an expectation they could never fully deliver on, so the monster they fed swept them aside as weak and ineffectual.
But they still don't see it. Give them a chance, and they'll go right back to it.
