Two days per year I dread. December 31 and July 4. Echoes, from miles around, booming, distant fireworks, some of them sound like theyre coming right through my living room. The smell of sulfur wafting through the air. The smells and sounds of a battlefield. Firecrackers sound like small arms. Bursting arial shells sound like mortars. My PTSD rattles me to the core. I jump out of my skin with each explosion. I cringe, duck, curse, and consciously remind myself what Im hearing is not what I think I heard. Im safe, yet I feel violated. Trying to sleep through it - HA! What a joke. Not happening. I lie in bed, talking myself through each bone jarring burst, placing lucid thoughts into reality, and pulling my subconscious away from events that happened long ago. Dammit. I hate fireworks.

silicone earplugs and fairly loud white noise. In Mexico I stayed in a hotel room with a rock bank going full blast on the other side of the wall and slept undisturbed.
