WASHINGTON - Evangelicals laud her. Abortion rights advocates fear her. If President Donald Trump nominates Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court, the nation will be plunged into another divisive confirmation hearing, with Democrats sure to interrogate her on abortion and how she would approach long-standing court precedents.
But will they focus on her Catholic religious beliefs?
Barrett, a former law professor at Notre Dame University, was one of four judges Trump interviewed Monday and she has written about a Catholic judge's duties to respect both the law and the church. After Trump nominated her to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals last year, Barrett faced grilling from Democrats on whether her Catholic faith would guide her decisions, with California Sen. Dianne Feinstein telling Barrett that "the dogma lives loudly within you."
This time, evangelicals, Catholics and other supporters of Barrett are watching closely to see how Democrats approach her possible nomination, which could be a rallying cry for Trump's base.
"I would hope that her religious beliefs do not become an issue again," said Steven H. Aden, chief legal officer for Americans United for Life, a leading anti-abortion organization.
In last year's confirmation hearing, "Sen. Feinstein took a risk and she lost credibility," he added. "That may play well in California but it doesn't play well in the rest of the country."
Barrett, a law clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, was one of four judges Trump is reported to have met with on Monday, and she appears to be a favorite of Trump's evangelical supporters, in part because she is open about her faith. A mother of seven, she is a member of the Federalist Society, an influential conservative group that has counseled Trump on judicial nominees. At 46, she's one of the youngest judges on Trump's shortlist for the Supreme Court, giving the president an opportunity to influence the court for many decades to come.

(10,476 posts)Barrett is a member of a whackadoo, a misogynist, speaking-in-tongues Christian cult. Our party should be highlighting that, not the Catholic angle.

(15,124 posts)care if she's an atheist, a Muslim or a druid. BUT----
she is not entitled to impose that dogma on the rest of us by employing it to influence or even supercede the laws as written.
A zygote is a zygote no matter what her interpretation of the Bible might call it.!

(420 posts)Every progressive needs to remember that the righties and the complicit mainstream media will twist every issue we bring up to make us look bad. Feinstein was made to look anti-Catholic which isnt true and obviously a losing strategy. Be clear we are not focusing the Catholic Christmas rich but on the cults they belong to like this:

Like one of the comments to the article says, if they want to live their lives like they are in the 1700s, that is their choice, but dont take the rest of us with you. I know a couple who are really into the wifes submission and they take such interest in counseling their young adult childrens married friends. These cults are so aggressive and such zealots who wont stop until they force everyone
to follow their rules.

(15,286 posts)This is a cult or at least a cult-like organization. It seems to be majority Catholic, but welcomes and has members or all faiths. Zeroing in on her membership in this organization isn't an attack on her religion because People of Praise calls itself a "community". It's not a religion, it's a supplement to whatever church the member currently belongs and where they worship.
This is how they describe themselves: "People of Praise: Hard to Understand and Thats OK
A category-defying community responds to the mainstream press."

religion it is this disturbing offshoot she belongs to. In my opinion her adherance to this group make her a poor choice for any judgeship much less SCOTUS.
People of Praise, which the New York Times reported last fall. Law professor and Senate candidate Richard Painter tweeted the old Times story this weekend and said People of Praise looks like a cult; another prominent critic one-upped Painter by calling it a secretive religious cult....
"The Times story does not use the word cult, but its easy to see why some of its details alarmed many readers. People of Praise members are said to be accountable to a same-sex adviser, called a head for men and (until recently) a handmaiden for women, who gives input on a wide variety of personal decisions. They swear a lifelong oath of loyalty to the group. As one blogger put it, Barrett is a dangerous religious extremist who believes a federal judge can subvert the U.S. Constitution and the laws of the United States in order to promote her own religious agenda. Knowing Barretts fiercely conservative legal credentialsclerking for fellow Catholic Antonin Scalia, membership in the Federalist Societywhat are we to make of her alleged membership in such a group?"

(61,695 posts)If she responds to judicial questions using criteria of her handmaid and that person's Guide, then their perceived interpretation of scripture seems fair game to me. Scripture isn't the source of our justice system.
