Therese Okoumou. A hero.

Wouldn’t come down from the Statue of Liberty until “all the children are released.”

In a way, I'm totally in favor of the spirit behind what Therese did, but, it just was not a good idea. Sensational does not always equal Effective.

Edit: and the statement "I'm not coming down from Statue of Liberty until all the children are released" is just quixotic as f***. It was a waste of energy, sadly.

The New York Daily News reports that Okoumou, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a resident of the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island. She has lived in the borough for the last ten years. A neighbor told the tabloid, “She can be very nice and she can be a bitch. When I vacuum, she bangs on the wall. I bang back, and she put a dent in my door.” The pair’s beef ended over Okoumou’s love of her neighbor’s dog. An NYPD spokesman, Officer Brian Glacken, told CNN that, “At first, she wasn’t friendly with us, but we took the time to get a rapport with her so that took a while… She just kind of mentioned the kids in Texas. I guess the whole debate that’s going on about that. In the beginning, she threatened to push us off, push the ladder off, but we stayed with her… At first she was being a little combative, then she was willing to cooperate with us. She actually apologized to us for having to go up and get her.”

even she might now agree (20-20 hindsight) the scene made didn't ultimately help any.

But maybe it did? Who knows, it only just happened.

They interviewed inconvenienced tourists and sympathetic police.
The reason for her climb was barely mentioned.
Staying until the children are released = 2 hours.

NOT EFFECTIVE.

Didn't do a thing to help get kids and parents reunited, pissed off a lot of voters, cost money that could have been used to protect people, put people's safety at jeopardy.

But hey. She got on television. That seem's to be what you do to be called a hero.

The police even had to give her water. Sure she was going to stay up there “until the children were released.”
