Linda Haney for Knox County (TN) Mayor (AUGUST 2 Election)

Last edited Tue Jul 17, 2018, 05:15 PM - Edit history (3)

was born and grew up in a modest sized Illinois town named Kankakee where I also met my husband, Dan. We began riding motorcycles together as one of our main hobbies. One of my fondest memories is our 17,000 mile cross country trip through the western states in 1991. This trip showed me why I needed to work to protect our planet – and so my pet project of picking up litter began!

A little bit more about me - Dan and I had one child together, Bart Haney. When he was young he suffered an injury that confined him to a wheel chair. During this time with my son, I understood the tremendous work Special Education teachers provide to families like mine.

Sadly, our son’s health became worse and he passed away at age 21. A loss like this is still difficult to talk about, but it has given me so much empathy for other parents who have had to go through an experience like this. Because of Bart, and knowing the things he had to miss out on, I will forever advocate for policies that provide all children with enriching experiences and opportunities. That is why my number one issue is making sure our public schools are fully funded.

Dan and I have worked as a team through the highs and the lows for 52 years now. In that time period, we were able to run two different small businesses. We started out running a pool construction company in Miami, Florida where I mainly supervised the service side of the business. A couple years later, I started a business selling a line of specialized eyewear to motorcyclists all around the country. Dan and I decided to move to Knox County in 1993 so our business could flourish. We built our home from the ground up on acreage just outside of Halls Crossroads.

I lost my business to the downturn of the economy, so Dan and I went back to Union construction jobs. I was a proud member of Laborers’ Local 818, a construction union, for over ten years. Coming home with dirtied carhartts and boots showed me how necessary it was for women in all different professions to receive equal pay for equal work, like I did.

After retirement I volunteered with seniors and Alzheimer patients. I still have great connections with some of the patients I was close with. Additionally, I volunteered for 15 years with the Knox County Democratic Party working to get other candidates elected. Now, I realize I cannot be in the background anymore, so I’m stepping up and running for mayor. I believe my life experiences have prepared me to lead Knox County into a better tomorrow, and I ask for your vote August 2nd.
