It was 2 am here in KCMO in my neighborhood.
There is always one kid who doesn't go home. He just keeps going all by himself for ever. I was ready to tackle him by the time he finally stopped.
Police don't come for fireworks here. They are illegal but every neighborhood has people setting them off.

(3,322 posts)But good for them Once a year. John Adams was correct:
"I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."

(4,742 posts)It is one night per year. Throw in some ear plugs, have a glass of wine, and go to bed.

(4,742 posts)I'm a licensed pyrotechnician. I make the booms happen. But I always feel bad because I know that many animals are scared.

(2,275 posts)I've worked hard at writing and formatting posts which explore critical issues pertaining to democracy, political process, etc., etc. Such efforts have had multiple recs. and dynamic responses yet not lifted out of obscurity. Are they simply deemed by the editors not "entertaining" enough?
Just good ol' curiosity.

(2,275 posts)When I saw it posted in "Trending Now" it had no posts nor recommendations. It simoly wasn't trending. An editor moved it without any recommendations or initial signs of community interest. A couple comments were added as I composed what I thought was the first response.
Don't get me wrong, it was a perfectly well-written and curious piece. But it didn't seem to have the gravitas of dozens of other reflections which had a lot of community interest reflections that never nade it to DU "prime time." (the "meh" comment by another DU member sums up the lack of gravitas).
Anyway, I shouldn't take it so seriously. An editor was just trying to goose some DU participation. Maybe, in an age where lying is becoming "normal," placing a non-trending, non recommended piece into a "Trending Now" column is OK. Like, whatever and stuff.

(30,481 posts)What a night. They were out in force. Lone wolfs could be heard up to around 3 am. No sirens in my immediate area. 👍🏼

then it was like someone flipped an Off switch.
Which was good as we have 2 dogs that were
pretty scared till then.

(9,265 posts)Idiots in the neighborhood kept going til midnight or more. I feel sorry for dog owners. My granddog (a lab) doesn't seem to care, thankfully. Our cats slept right through it.

(128,905 posts)One of my sisters has a black lab (have only had him a couple years after getting him as a pup) and my sister was out in the yard setting off some of the smaller things in one of those consumer packs from the supermarket, and she was in view to him while he was lying on the floor near a closed sliding glass door. He suddenly jumped up and liked to propel his 100+ lb self through those heavy doors while barking like crazy.
I figured pets like him would try to hide but no, he was ready to "take care of the problem".
I know that most animals, including human infants and toddlers, have much more sensitive hearing. I remember a niece as a toddler who would shriek whenever someone started the vacuum.

(128,905 posts)And he is also the same guy who had already started at like 2 pm just to get some test detonations in.
This year, for the first time, the state of PA legalized non-aerial consumer fireworks. It didn't sound any different around me given that being in close proximity to 2 other states that for some reason, always had stores selling them (despite them being totally banned in those states) means that stuff had always been going strong (including "illegal" aerial ones) for years around here.
