‘The GOP Must Be Destroyed Before It Can Be Rebuilt’
July 5, 2018 at 7:58 am EDT
By Taegan Goddard

Max Boot: “After a lifetime as a Republican, I re-registered as an independent on the day after Donald Trump’s election… I am more convinced than ever that I made the right decision. The transformation I feared has taken place. Just look at the reaction to President Trump’s barbarous policy of taking children away from their parents as punishment for the misdemeanor offense of illegally entering the country. While two-thirds of Americans disapproved of this state-sanctioned child abuse, forcing the president to back down, a majority of Republicans approved. If Trump announced he were going to spit-roast immigrant kids and eat them on national TV (apologies to Jonathan Swift), most Republicans probably would approve of that, too. The entire Republican platform can now be reduced to three words: whatever Trump says.”

“Personally, I’ve thrown up my hands in despair at the debased state of the GOP. I don’t want to be identified with the party of the child-snatchers. But I respect principled conservatives who are willing to stay and fight to reclaim a once-great party that freed the slaves and helped to win the Cold War. What I can’t respect are head-in-the-sand conservatives who continue to support the GOP by pretending that nothing has changed.”

“That is why I join Will and other principled conservatives, both current and former Republicans, in rooting for a Democratic takeover of both houses in November. Like postwar Germany and Japan, the Republican Party must be destroyed before it can be rebuilt.”

If we could somehow do that, we would find out what "conservative" actually means.

That is what they promote, more for the rich, less for the poor and working class. drumpf has nothing but contempt for them, so lies and calls them his base when he only wants to hurt them physically and economically. He knows they're as ignorant, in many cases, as he is so plays to that and their fears and their utter racism while he destroys their daily lives with his for the rich only (well, them and dictators worldwide) policies.

Edit - I was trying to use the equal sign but it wouldn't take in the title and then I saw a typo - sigh.

The only difference with Trump is that he uses a bullhorn to broadcast conservative republican racism and corporate fascism.

He's the child of Republican conservatives. Their entire ideology is regressive.

I’ll raise one to the grand OLD party making an eventual return so we can get back to politics as usual - routine and slow moving - a merry go round instead of a rollercoaster if you will.

Fixed it for ya.

Trump is the culmination of the GOP goal. They just got surprised with what they wrought. Next time they'll get it right, they promise.

NOT!

Unless, by "rebuilding" they mean actually becoming conservative in the sense of embracing conservation of natural resources and respect for people in general beyond a select few who look exactly like them.

Trump has destroyed 100+ years of bipartisan rules, mores, laws, and much of the common good, social contract style of governing. There is much to undo. Everything in fact. Democrats can melt it down, but old time common sense civic-minded Republicans, 1910 style, must be prepared to rebuild what communities in the Main Street business sense stood for. America is a ghost town at the present moment.

yet I expect you will continue to vote (R) up and down the rest of the ballot at the state/local level because they have the (R) next to their names and continue to support other draconian and harmful policies that people like you preached about and foisted upon others. "States Rights" and all. THIS is YOUR creation as a RW columnist. This was only the natural conclusion of decades of careful crafting and media manipulation.

And that so-called "party that freed the slaves"? It disintegrated after passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when the southern strategy took hold, and the GOP welcomed and embraced the most self-entitled racist dredges of this nation.

Hogwash. Conservatives, you now own your greedy, racist platform and no one, including your own cheating, idiotic-meme bleating base truly believes otherwise.
I've so had it with the faux-goody two shoe doublespeak from these bastards, politician, pundit at base alike... however... I'm going to be more frank with my scorching here than in generally welcomed on DU:
I keep seeing the political pendulum swinging further right every cycle, and "who's going to protect my money" democrats are complicit. I have very little to lose here, given nothing and ostracized by much of my family long ago. I see how the truly left base gets bashed and subverted here.
Without fully distributive policy-making, the Democratic party has surrendered itself as the left-leaning puppets of the Republicans who hold all the real power here, the economic disparity will continue to rip this country to shreds.
I.E. yes, the ACA was a step in the correct direction. Even that step is being damaged. You know very well why, and I'm ashamed of the greed.
