Why are they there?

I seriously doubt that they went on their own volition? They were most likely ordered or requested to go by Donald J Trump. But why?

With Trump, optics are everything. It would look much better for him to be meeting with Vladimir Putin, after a group of Republicans cleared the trail for him. They could say they are attempting to "normalize relations" with Russia. That gives Trump his cover.

This bunch of sycophant Republicans have no problem with helping their president with his "Russian problem". They are very useful idiots.

Then, Trump and Putin, can laugh and joke behind closed doors with no American reporters and no American, except Donald Trump, to tell us what they discussed? That should make everyone feel warm and secure this day after the Fourth of July.
