Look at the crap Dinesh D'Souza is peddling now.
This is political and historical sacrilege, RW propaganda at its most brown-nosing.

(29,166 posts)This is a bit simplistic... but the GOP of Lincoln is, essentially, the Democratic Party of today... and the Democratic party of Lincolns time is now the GOP.
This essentially happened during the sixties, early seventies... and took only one generation to complete.

(16,646 posts)The Republican Party of Lincoln were the "radicals" of their day. The democrats were "conservative" in about every way there was. During the period from about 1910-1930 the GOP slowly became the party of the rich. Teddy Roosevelt had huge battles with the GOP over their move towards the right. With the Depression came the rise of FDR which began the shift of the democrats to the left. At that time, most African Americans were Republicans because of Lincoln and because the southern democratic party was so racist. After FDR, and Truman, the democratic party nationally started moving towards what we know today. In the '60s, the GOP ran off most of their AA members with Goldwater's "Southern Strategy" and the embracing of the "Dixiecrats" of the south.
The GOP regularly tries to trot out this old bit of fiction, mostly because a century ago walked away from the legacy of Lincoln. But they constantly try to avoid the last century, and stay connected to Lincoln's reputation.
