Thai cave rescue: Authorities debate soccer team's escape routes, but nature may decide

Speaking from the scene, Australian Army Warrant Officer Chris Moc said the safest option would be for the water to recede but he said that was, "completely dependent upon nature".

"We need to ensure that … any operation that we undertake … the paramount consideration is their safety," he said.

"At the moment, all efforts are being made to lower that water level within the cave and that is going to be our best option."

Thai officials are hoping an upgraded draining effort can lower the water level in an area where it is still at the ceiling or just about.

The idea is to get some headroom so the boys would not be reliant on scuba apparatus for a long stretch and could keep their heads above water.

Local Thai broadcaster TPBS reported the officials expect to decrease the water level approximately 30-50 centimetres per hour, while the current pumping can decrease the water by 1-2 centimetres per hour.
