I'm seeing increased incidents where lefties "hit" back against MAGA people.

One video a man named "Jimenez" throws his coke on someone wearing a MAGA hat (the video is only part of the information, since it doesn't show how it started). These things are increasingly happening.

Oh, my goodness, the whining and shock! by Trumpers at such inhumanity and criminal behavior being perpetrated on innocent MAGAs! It's just a hat! (yeah...and a white hood is just a hood.)

My response: Trump has set the tone in the country. Violence, hitting, punching, disrespecting others' opinions, calling people "animals" that "infest" the country, etc. Why are they surprised that many citizens on both sides are following suit?

Methinks that they are so used to those on the left taking the high road that they are shocked to see them finally giving it back. The guy just threw a coke, for gosh sakes. It's not like he marched in a white supremacist parade and beat up black people or drove a car into a crowd, or shot and killed some newspaper people.

Things in the country are insane! But it's about time the lefties are speaking out and getting off that high ground pedestal. We're in a battle for the country. I can't do much, but I do try to not let even casual comments pass w/o saying something. It's unpleasant. But to be quiet is to imply agreement. The Trumpers are shocked!

Please re-read the OP, then read my response to all these other responses that misunderstood the OP.

Note that nowhere in my OP do I condone Jimenez's behavior. The OP is not about that at all. It's about the over the top reaction by Trumpers, whose followers have recently killed five members of the press, rammed a car into a crowd and killed a woman, beat up black people at a couple of events. They expressed no outrage over those acts, which resulted in injuries and deaths.

I just did that quickly & didn't realize that people would focus on Jiminez's behavior, since that's not what the post was about. It goes w/o saying that entering someone's space is not good (or legal), unless it's defensive. But it is a minor offense, compared to what we have just seen, with the MAGA guy killing five people of the press and injuring others, and other acts of violence and offenses...and not a peep from the Trumpers. But THIS...they go apeshit over. And the Sarah Sanders restaurant thing.

I think they are just shocked that they are getting some pushback, after over a decade of dishing it out w/o repercussions. That's just my personal opinion. Which is what my OP was about.

Edit to add: While I appreciate the belief, it is just a fact that the post is not about judging Jimenez's behavior. The post is about the over-the-top reaction to it, given all the violence, injuries, & deaths by those on the right which didn't result in any "shock" or public disapproval by Trumpers, that I saw. But THIS Coca Cola incident caused them to come out of the woodwork en masse, expressing shock & outrage. That's all.

I didn't include the video because I assumed it had been posted already. It wasn't new, by the time I saw it. DU members are fast about putting things up very quickly.

The post is clearly about the over the top reaction to Jimenez's coke thing, when there wasn't a peep out of them about acts of violence by MAGA people or sympathizers that resulted in serious physical injury or death.

My post goes on to guess why that is. My guess is that they are used to not having to deal with pushback. "When they go low, we go high," has been the typical response by those on the left.

30. For those who mistakenly think my post condoned throwing soda on someone...
Thu Jul 5, 2018, 04:49 PM
Jul 2018

it does not. Please re-read it.

My post was about the over the top Trumper reaction to it. Reaction to an act that was, after all, not harmful physically, compared with, say, a MAGA follower killing five people of the press, supremacists marching with MAGA hats beating up black people in Charlottesville, a MAGA guy ramming his car into a group of protesters & killing one woman in Charlottesville (who Trump called "fine people" ), and other physically violent acts that resulted in injury and death.

My post was about Trumpers expecting Democrats and others on the left to stay on the high ground that they normally occupy, instead of realizing that Trump has set a tone, and many in the country are feeling that anger. Including those on the left, who normally keep such emotions in check.

I don't condone what the guy did, but I will say that the video shows only Jimenez's reaction to something. It does not show what he was reacting to, the lead-up. Maybe it wouldn't make a difference. But I just noticed that it is missing part of the encounter.

My personal feeling, though, is that while I don't condone any action that invades someone's space, I can understand an Hispanic being especially offended at this time, what with the President calling his or his fellow Hispanics "animals" who have "infested" the country, and who has taken children from their parents and can't say when or if the children will be returned, and keeping those children in "rooms with chain link walls" (as Sessions calls the cages). Calling the homeland a sh*thole country. I can understand his momentary lapse in reacting to someone who approves of all that behavior, because of the extreme circumstances in the country right now. But understanding does not mean condoning.

But, as I said, my OP was not about what the Jimenez man did or said, but was about the over-the-top reaction to it by Trumpers, who are no strangers to hate rhetoric and behavior. I just think they are surprised to see the left take any sort of steps against them, instead of the silent, respectful stance they normally take.

Everyone in the country is affected by the hateful tone, rhetoric, and behavior in the country, that has been set by the leader.

It may not be "assault" to throw a coke in someone's face, but then again, it may be. Depends on which state, I think. It's still an action that could warrant a civil suit. Don't throw a coke at a Westboro Baptist member, they WILL sue, it's what they do.

And yes...throwing something at another person is assault, technically, although it causes no physical harm. I offered no opinion on Jimenez's actions. In fact, I cannot, since the whole encounter is not on the video. My post was about the over-the-top reaction to it by people who just read about a MAGA supporter killing five press people and injuring others, ramming a car into a crowd and killing a woman, and other acts...and not one peep by Trumpers in my community forum or elsewhere. But THIS gets the full treatment by them.

Just that reports of those were met with silence from Trumpers, yet they scream holy murder when this guy threw some Coca Cola on someone. And we didn't see in the video even what precipitated it. (Not that I condone it. I definitely do not. Words are always better.)

Sat Jul 7, 2018, 01:42 AM

as a term of endearment, even though most liberals are center-left... it's also a shorthand in the social media age to describe anyone on the left of the political spectrum, and not necessarily describing 'the far left'. just like 'righty' describes anyone right of center, not necessarily 'the far right'.

Your OP was excellent as it stimulated an important conversation ... can't say I'm surprised by some of the comments. Fascism thrives because far too many in this country are dedicated more to civility and order than liberty and justice, as MLK observed more than a generation ago.

This anonymous witness needs to talk to the police. They will confirm she was there by looking at the security camera videos, which will give some credibility to the article. That said, it only changes things a very little bit. These were 16 year old kids, jimenez is 30. Grown ups can't assault and steal from kids because of words. This guys best course of action would have been to grab his phone and video these kids and what they were saying, and make them the big news story. Provided they were actually saying what the article says. Most everyone has a smart phone now. We whip out the camera and video at the drop of a hat. If I heard anyone talking about lynching people I'd turn it on and start videoing. No one in this wataburger did that? Jimenez didn't, the witness didn't? No one else? Either way it don't matter. Hands off the kids.

Fascism is itself violent with ethnoterrorism at it's core, and fully deserves the response it gets.

PoC kids at the behest of the MAGAts are being tossed into cages and treated like animals.

These white brats who provoked the incident and staged this video - get off easy - they get to go back to their comfortable middle class lives while mommy feeds them cookies and reads them bedtime stories.

Where I come from, if you talk shit (regardless of age), you'd better be willing to 'throw down'.

Whites have long lived in a comfortable bubble that allows them to support/incite/commit violence (Trump's rise to power is such an example) while not being held accountable.

All he did was throw their coke and take the MAGA hat, which is the equivalent of a klan hood or swastika. And I fully believe they provoked and staged the video based upon reports on social media and elsewhere.

Whites have long foisted an ethnofascist system on PoC, best exemplified by Trump's election, and you can't expect people to sit back and fold their hands.

I have no desire to throw down with anyone, merely stating how it is in the diverse neighborhood I grew up in, and how people value accountablity.

Trump is a perfect example of the white brat who spent his entire life running his mouth without accountabilty.

Logic 101.

A. Guy does something that goes against a MAGA person that does not cause injury or death.
B. The MAGA cyber community goes apesh*t over it.
C. Guys with MAGA hats, or marching with MAGAs, commit real physical injury to people, as well as murder. AND acts that go against other citizens but don't cause injury or death.
D. The MAGA cyber community says nothing about "C."

The point is MAGA-pies disparate reaction to disagreements, arguments, or actions. If you don't agree their reaction is based on whether it's one of their own doing the actions or the opposing side, that's fine. That is not my observation, though. Which is what my post was about, as it clearly says in plain English.

Don't know. What you quoted doesn't say.

State Jail Felony Theft
Theft is a state jail felony in Texas if the value of the property or services stolen is $1,500 or more but less than $20,000, or if the property is of a specific type, such as a firearm or certain livestock valued at less than $20,000. ( § 31.03(e)(4).) The punishment for a state jail felony in Texas is incarceration ranging from 180 days to two years of in a state jail, plus a fine of no more than $10.000. ( § 12.35.)

https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/resources/criminal-defense/crime-penalties/petty-theft-texas-penalties-defense

There are also laws regarding stealing from a person, when perp is using a deadly weapon, which is intended to cover muggings, it seems.

And if they were all 'what to do you mean' I'd have recited their words back to them, loud enough to get attention, then I've have turned to the people around them and asked them 'did you hear those kids talking like that? About how whites should be allowed to murder immigrants for the 4th of July?'. Hopefully some of them would've nodded/said yes at the very least.

Then I've said "look guys, you wanna talk like that amongst yourselves, at your playground, during recess or whatever, it's a free country. But talking that way, loudly, in public? That's like yelling 'fire' in a theater. There's LIMITS, kids? You get me?

Now are you done talking this way or do I need to keep filming?"

I see a MAGA hat as an attempt at intimidation. Intimidation using a very passive voice.

Good people should avoid any action that would put them in legal jeopardy.....but addressing the hat up close and personal.......that needs to happen. Yes, he was an adult versus kids. Not entirely fair but I think it is fair to say 'it takes a village to raise a child'.

This is no time to be civil. This is no time for appeasement.

Push back. If physically pushed - defend yourself. Don't be the original pusher.

Example - Tom Malinowski (CD-7 Democratic Candidate) marched in a parade on 4th of July with County Democratics and local Candidates.

A Citizen yelled from his porch "Go home!"

They yelled back with much hostility: WE ARE HOME!!!!!

He went inside.

Ain't no takesy backsey. <- JAG's dad quote.

The higher road says -No retreat and no surrender. Authoritarian Fascists "know" anger, force, yelling, threats in numbers etc etc. They can't be won over.

134. Do you have a comment on the subject of the OP, though?
Sat Jul 7, 2018, 08:47 AM
Jul 2018

It's a given that people shouldn't throw soda on each other & steal another's hat. For one thing, that could get a person shot.

But the OP was about the overreaction of the Trumpers to an incident that was minor, in comparison to the incidents that have been caused by those on the right that resulted in physical injury and death.

I noticed that overreaction on a local community forum, where they are outraged! Shocked! How dare he do that! What's the world coming to! But they were silent during Charlottesville, where blacks were beaten up, MAGAs and supremacists were marching together, where a woman was killed & others seriously injured, or that incident where the NY young lawyer goes off in a deli about the workers there speaking Spanish, or the children being taken from their parents & incarcerated in cages, or the groups of high school students wearing MAGA hats and taunting Hispanic students in the lunchroom, etc. Remember when Tea Partiers yelled derogatory names to the Congress' Black Caucus as they entered the building...and someone spit on one them? No reaction from the far right on those incidents.

But over the top for the Sarah Sanders incident, this throwing soda & bad language incident, the "anti-American" protests, etc.

Why would they would be so outraged at incidents that pale in comparison to incidents by the far-right in recent years? It doesn't seem to be fake outrage. I am guessing that it's because they aren't used to seeing those on the left figuratively fight back. They're supposed to stand there, as usual, and take the high road. It's easier to bully someone, when the object doesn't take defensive action or bully back. They are truly surprised to see pushback.

Here's a phone msg using the N word by a far righter to a black Congressman, and a shot of a far right protestor spitting on a black Congressman:
