(56,828 posts)Republicans picked up 60 seats in the House.
However, Democrats aren't just battling Republicans that they're running against, they need to fight voter suppression, gerrymandering and Russian attempts to influence the election.

(23,945 posts)since it relies on a fairly static electorate composition to be effective.
"spread out your safest seat advantage to cover more districts" can work as long as the original turnout holds, but if you've remapped a 20-pt advantage seat into 4 5-pt advantage seats, your brilliant plan is going to encounter problems if a couple of those gerrymandered districts shift by more than 5 points. if all goes well, we could be seeing a lot of that in November.

(56,828 posts)big time by the 40+ retirements among the GOP. Some of those incumbents may have been consistent 20 point winners, but how will a virtual unknown fare against a motivated Democrat?

(7,517 posts)I think was his point. We can't let that deter us, though. Even picking up 30 to 40 seats with the gerrymanering, etc. you point out would be a great victory in 2018. We have to appreciate the potential positives that can come America's way in November if we all fight for our country.

(9,478 posts)Because of all the gerrymandered House seats created after 2010. But we have to keep in mind the long game and win the governorship on states like OH, FL, WI, PA, so that the House districts after 2020 will be fairer. Otherwise it will be another 10 years of those states being dominated by Republicans because they will have complete control of redistricting after 2020.
